Collecting Baseball Cards is not only fun but can be profitable as well!

It was raining one Saturday afternoon and I was cleaning up around the house. You know how it goes....sort this....pile that....get rid of this. It was closet after closet and I kept coming out with more and more baseball cards. It was at that moment that I realized, I was really into collecting baseball cards. I had been buying for years, for as long as I can remember for the matter, but I never considered myself a collector. After all I wasn't like the guys that own a shop and live for the next card, or was I?

I visit a few local shop and buy too many cards from E-Bay but I guess somewhere along the line I had become a collector. I had thousands of cards. I wasn't too sure of what to do with them but I soon figured it out.

Organizing your cards

What is the best way to organize your collection?

There are many way to organize your collection of baseball cards.

You could:

  1. Sort them by the year they were made and try and complete your favorite year.

  2. Sort them by your favorite team and start a nice collectors book.

  3. Sort them by your favorite players and try to get as many as you can.

  4. Or just lump them all into a shoe box and hope for the best.

I like to combine a few of these techniques. The first thing that I did was to gather up all the Minnesota Twins that I could find. It was then off to E-Bay to find a nice album to put them in. There are several companies that make these albums and they are designed just for collecting baseball cards. This will make a very nice gift to my son when he is old enough to enjoy them. There are a few that have good value!

The next thing that I did was to dig out the oldest cards and sort them by year. These cards were off to E-Bay to try and recoup some of my spending from before I realized I was a collector.

Then I took what was left and kept some of my favorite players and put them into another album from good old E-Bay. These were the guys I grew up with and I may be dating myself a bit but Tom Seaver, Pete Rose, Rollie Fingers and of course Bob Johnson were the guys I was going to keep.

Everything else went into a drawer in my study that I still pull from when I need a little extra cash for whatever or whenever I need it. It has become a nice little "go to" if I want to buy a fishing rod or ..... more cards!

Do you need to have a small fortune to collect Baseball Cards?

Maybe if you start with Mantle.....

There are many great cards to be had today. It used to be that you had to travel to card shows and different shops in order to find the "good" cards. Now, with just a few clicks of the mouse, you are on your way to some of the most sought after cards on the market. If you are looking to collect cards from Mickey Mantle, you better have some cash, but there are plenty of other cards out there that will bring you great pride and may just be the "Mick" of tomorrow!

No one can predict what cards will be the next diamonds in the rough. There are many current cards today that demand some pretty high prices but can still be had at a bargain if you hit the right auction or card shop. I like to watch for up and coming guys that have jersey or autograph cards out in the market that have a low supply. Collecting Baseball Cards is just like any other market, price is determined completely by supply and demand! Watch for the deals and make your move!

No you don't have to spend your 401K to get a nice collection.....

Start small and build from there!

There is really no reason to go out and spend your life savings to get started in collecting baseball cards. You can find some really nice cards at some really cheap prices.

Recently I visited a local card shop with my son and our cub scout pack. The card company Topps is sponsoring a great program to get kids involved the way they used to be. I can remember collecting cans and bottles as a kid and trading them in at the local store for a pack or two of the latest cards. Now, this may not be possible today but for a small price you can still get some great cards.

I like to watch E-Bay for high numbers of current cards that have reasonable shipping charges. I bought over two thousands Minnesota Twins cards for the cub scout pack for less then $20.00. The boys had a great time sorting them and it really got them interested in trading like I and so many other kids did growing up. Even as an adult that wants to get started in collecting baseball cards, you can get in the game with just a little cash and a few minutes of your time!

Lower priced but still great cards
