Ranked #2,150 in Shopping, #14,527 overall

Once upon a time, back in the days when men were men and women were men, each man has his own cologne of choice, his signature scent. Thanks to mass marketing and product commodification this is no longer true. Most men don't wear cologne, and of those who do, almost all wear the same five or ten fragrances. And don't even get me started on Axe Body Spray.

This lens is designed to help you develop your own signature scent. This lens is designed to help you look sophisticated. To make you stand out from the crowd. To show the ladies that you're the guy whose got his act together (or at least make them think you do!).

Contents:

-What should I look for in a cologne?
-How do I apply cologne?
-What are the best colognes?
-What other resources are there to help?

At the very least, this lens is designed to convince you stop wearing that f@#$ing Axe Body Spray.

What Should I Look for in a Cologne

The same fragrance can smell different on different people because each individual's skin has its own chemical signature and pH balance. Because of this it's important to sample the cologne on your own skin and not just on the test strips they give you at the store.

However, when you go to the store it's best to avoid spraying every cologne on your skin. Not only will you likely get kicked out of the mall later, but you won't be able to distinguish between fragrances. The best method is to get a pile of test strips and a pen. Write the name of the cologne on the strip and then spray the strip with the fragrance. Choose your top five or so fragrances, and only then try a couple of them on your skin. It is important to wait at least twenty minutes before making your final decision, as this is what fragrance will actually smell like in day to day use.

How do I apply cologne?

Where should I apply fragrance?

Colognes react to body heat, so it's best to target areas of the body that produce the most heat and are exposed to air. Good places include the wrists, the back of the neck, and the chest. Avoid applying to back of ears as the fragrance will come off too strong.

Some General Tips

-Avoid rubbing your wrists together because the friction will make the cologne turn sour.

-Do not apply cologne to wet skin as the scent will dissipate too quickly and the residue will smell sour.

-In the strange but true category, wearing the same cologne as the girl's father may work in your favor...

What is the best cologne?

Or, more commonly, what is the best cologne to pick up women? Sadly, there is no one answer on this. First, each cologne will smell different on each person because of difference in skin type and pH balance. Second, different girls are different (I know, I know). A girl may love the smell of a cologne on one guy but hate the smell of the same cologne on a different guy. So what can we do?

The best advice is to choose a cologne you like that also matches your personality type. Wearing an ultra-masculine cologne like Kouros if you aren't ultra masculine is like wearing a huge cowboy hat to a party and then just sitting in the corner -- it makes you look awkward. Wearing the right cologne for you will make you look self-confident, and ultimately self-confidence is the most attractive quality in a guy. Trust me, I know. I read it on Wikipedia.

There are hundreds of colognes on the market today, and below I list just the best of the best. These aren't necessarily the most popular, because most people just buy whatever Walmart or their local drug store is selling. However, these are the ones that people who know cologne love.

To make things easier, I have grouped the fragrances below by recommended use. I have tried almost all of these at one point or another, and you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Best Selling Fragrances

Cool Water By Davidoff For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray 2.5 Ounces

Another cologne that is very popular with high school and college kids. Brings back memories of lying in the grass watching the stars on a cool summers night.

Green Irish Tweed by Creed 1.0 oz Millesime Spray

GREEN IRISH TWEED is actually an exclusive niche fragrance, but I included it in this section because many people find it reminiscent of Cool Water. Worn by many celebrities, including of Cary Grant, Prince Charles, Richard Gere, and Robert Redford. Expensive, but outstanding!

Colognes for Summer

Sorry, there are no results available from Amazon.

Colognes for Winter

Carlos Santana for Men 3.4 oz Fine Cologne Spray

When I first got this cologne as a free sample, I didn't think it would be any good since it's made by a celebrity. I was wrong. This cologne is warm with notes of apple and vanilla, which makes it the perfect scent for a long walk on a cool fall day.

EDT SPRAY 3.4 OZ - VERY IRRESISTIBLE MAN by Givenchy

The only problem with this cologne is that girls love it to much. Once I wear this around a girl they complain whenever I wear anything else. Oh well, such is life.

But seriously, I've yet to meet a girl who hasn't complimented me on this cologne. You really can't go wrong here.

Love / Hate Fragrances

Either you love them or you hate them

Aramis By Aramis For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray 1.7 Ounces

Aramis was launched by Estee Lauder Companies in September 1964 in New York and then in the UK, exclusively in Harrods at first in 1965. It has remained popular ever since and is a true classic fragrance. Rich spices, sandalwood, leather, moss and clove. Recommended use: evening.

Kouros Fraicheur By Yves Saint Laurent For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray 1.6 Ounces

KOUROS is by far the most controversial scent of all time. It's said to be so manly that it makes some people physically ill.

Some choice reviews from basenotes.net:

"This is some kind of joke, right? Why on earth would anyone want to smell like an overpopulated men's restroom? Dead ringer for urinal cakes."

"Reminds me of a 'long haired wet dog'; disgusting physical sick effect & it hangs about for bloody ages."

Also the most popular cologne in Europe.

Further Resources

Basenotes.net -- The online fragrance community.
Basenotes is the best site on the net for fragrance reviews. It's always good to check out the reviews here before purchasing. However, be aware that taste in cologne is highly personal, so not everyone will like a fragrance no matter how good it is. Because of this almost no colognes get above three and a half stars. Many people will actually rate fragrances poorly just for being too popular. The site also has an excellent community forum and some useful articles.
Gameboy's Guide to Cologne
A Great guide to colognes specifically for picking up women. Most of the colognes in this guide that I like are listed above. Many of the rest are synthetic mass market colognes, such as Armani Code (formerly Armani Black Code), so caveat emptor. However, this is still a useful resource for seeing what others think.
