Wild Horses In My Meadow

Ranked #1,437 in Pets & Animals, #38,076 overall

Colorado's Wild Horses

Right outside my cabin window at this very moment is a band of wild horses. It is such a thrill to see and experience free ranging horses. I could easily spend my entire day just sitting quietly in the meadow observing these beautiful animals. And, if it does not disturb them, most likely I will. I can't think of a better way to enjoy living in harmony with wild, majestic creatures.

My love for horses has been a lifelong passion. To have wild horses living near me in this mountain valley is the ultimate dream come true. There is so much to gain from appreciating the privilege of being near an animal that could choose not to share space with you. These wild horses can go almost anywhere at any time. I feel enormously blessed when they grace a few minutes or hours of my day.

Would you like to see the wild horses that bring me such joy?

Mother's Day Baby

New Life

This foal was born either on Mother's Day or the day after (May 8th or 9th), so the baby - don't know yet if it is a filly or a colt - is three or four days old in these photos. I've been so worried about this baby because the weather has been just terrible for a newborn - well below freezing temperatures, snow and sleet, and a wicked wind chill. I was relieved when I was able to find the band of horses today to check on this foal. The photos had to be taken from a distance and through the windshield of my truck in order not to alarm the mare. That's why the quality is not the best. The proud mama is on the left.

Foal Frolicking in the Sunshine

It has been so delightful to experience the first few days of this foal's life. The baby mostly rests and nurses, as you might imagine. This afternoon's sunshine must have felt so good after yesterday's frigid temperatures and snowstorm. Shortly after I snapped this photo the foal, in a short burst of energy, was running and bucking exuberantly. I felt incredible happiness as I witnessed this moment of play.

Spirit to Spirit - The Connection With Horses

What is it about horses that speaks to one's soul? Unless you have ever felt a spirit connection with a horse, it is hard to explain. Ever since I was a little girl, my deepest desire was for a horse. I felt my life would be complete when I had a horse to love.

The only other thing I wanted, other than a horse, was cowboy boots. I desperately longed for a pair of my very own boots. My older cousin, Patty, had a pair of old beat up cowboy boots that were twice as big as my feet. It didn't matter to me. I loved boots so much that I clomped around in those huge cast-me-downs.

Even today, those two things, a horse and boots, along with a cowboy hat, would be near the top of my wish list. My needs are very simple.

I do have a horse connection, born year of the horse, and I have a beautiful collection of statues. A favorite horseback trip in Bryce Canyon was thrilling--had to trust my horse! Beautiful, beautiful lens! Thank you!

My Friend Flicka

When I was in elementary school, I read every horse book in every library within biking distance. I didn't have a horse and couldn't always be in the presence of my cousin's horse, Chico; so, the next best thing was reading and fantasizing about horses.

How I loved those horses in my storybooks - Flicka, Misty, Blaze, Stormy, the Black Stallion. Oh, why couldn't one of those wild horses show up where I lived?

We had horses when I was growing up and I love them. I have to joke though that my wife loves horses a lot and she always said she wanted a horse when she got older and all she ended up with was a Jackass. LOL Seriously though they are wonderful creatures and when you think about how significantly they helped shape the world it's amazing. Where would mankind be without them? Great lens for sure!

Seeing the picture captioned ""To me, horses and freedom are synonymous." ~ Veryl Goodnight", I realized suddenly how much I have given up to live in a city with good public transportation so that I can burn fewer fossil fuels. One of my long-held dreams was to live in such mountains. I am glad you are there, watching over the horses, lending your spirit to the land.

Oh wow! Yes, I have an affinity with horses and I was born in the Year of the Horse. While I no longer ride, one of my daughters has inherited this affinity and is turning into not just an accomplished rider of horses but she is also learning how to work with the more difficult ones.

In the UK we are fortunate enough to be able to get very close to wild horses in the New Forest and on Dartmoor and Exmoor - I say horses, but they are actually ponies.

However, it has always been my dream to travel to the central mountain states of the US to see the wild horses - Wyoming in particular. Why Wyoming? Well you have the Flicka books to thank for that :)

    I just love this lens!!

Wonderful pics and lens! I've owned horses most of my life; I still raise a foal once in awhile and do my own training. One of my mares is due to foal in early June. If you haven't read the classic "Smokey the Cowhorse" by Will James, you must get a copy & read it! It inspired me at a very young age to live the life I've lived.
