Colorado Front Range (Denver) Lawn Care Best Practices

Ranked #2,698 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #30,392 overall

Raising a healthy lawn on the Front Range can be a challenge, especially with the drought-related water conservation controls, inconsistent soil quality and scathing dry heat. This lens provides resources and tips for maintaining a healthy summer lawn.

Tips

  1. There isn't a lot of information on the web specifically about Colorado lawn care, but this is what I have learned from local gardners and experts that seems to work the best.
  2. Raise the blade height on your lawnmower. Lawns don't dry out as fast if you let the blades grow slightly longer than typical. Raising the blade height from two to three inches will make a world of difference.
  3. Sharpen your lawnmower blades often! A sharp blade prevents disease and keeps the lawn from drying out faster.
  4. Water in the early morning. Fungus grows best in the evening hours on a wet lawn. To prevent fungus growth, water your lawn between 4:30 and 6:00AM. This will allow the water to soak in, yet dry the blades during the day, so fungus doesn't have a chance to grow.
  5. Get a sprinkler system installed with a timer. If you don't have one, you need it. That way, you don't miss out on your precious watering allotment, and you don't have to wake up at 4:30AM to water!
  6. Use the fertilizers recommended below. Start with Revive, and use it consistently. Lay down the anti-fungal, and anti-insect fertilizers in maintenance mode, unless you have a serious problem. Preventative maintenance works!

Fertilizers

Revive
Revive isn't a fertilizer, but a "soil conditioner" that helps the soil retain water. Created by a Colorado company, and sold everywhere in CO, this will do wonders for your lawn.
Scotts Lawn Fungus Control
Scotts Lawn Fungus Control will keep the funguses at bay. Apply in preventative mode during the entire summer. Go full force if you develop a problem
Triazicide
Triazicide will take care of the spider mites and other lawn-eating insects. It's better for the environment than Diazinon, which is why I use it. Only use if you have a problem.
Fertilome Weed-Out
Fertilome Weed-Out is by far the best weed killer on the market.
Scotts TurfBuilder Plus
Scotts TurfBuilder Plus kills weeds and fertilizes your lawn. Use sparingly and follow directions, or face the danger of over-fertilizing.
Scotts LawnPro Super Winterizer
Scotts LawnPro Super Winterizer This really helps if you apply it in the Fall. Your lawn will be green next spring, before everyone else's. Your neighbors will be jealous.

Reseeding and Grass Seed Mixes

Scotts Pure Premium Heat
Scotts Pure Premium Heat and Drought is a good mix for Colorado. Remember that you have to water EVERY DAY for seeding to work.
Lilly Miller Hardy Mountain Blend
Lilly Miller Hardy Mountain Blend is an excellent choice for reseeding and overseeding. Again, water EVERY DAY!
