9# Common Acne Myths

When it comes to acne, it's difficult to know what strategies and methods actually work in regards to managing or removing acne, especially with so many misconceptions and ideas being circulated among discussion groups, communities and even acne support groups.

From dangerous remedies that will cause your acne to get worse, to following strategies that could cause permanent scarring, it's important to understand what really works, and what doesn't.

As someone who had suffered from extreme acne for many years, I compiled all of my personal strategies that led to my permanently combating acne so that anyone who is suffering from the same pain and embarrassment can follow the techniques that I used to conquer my acne problems, and live a permanent blemish free life.

Myth #1: It's All In Your Lifestyle

If you were to create a list based on the hundreds of theories and elements that are said to be associated with causing acne, your list would never be complete.

From chocolate being the leading cause of acne, to birth control pills, the wrong diet, exposure to the sun or to bacteria, people are consistently misled into believing that if they only avoid specific things, their acne would suddenly disappear.

So, if you've given up on eating chocolate because you were told that it was the primary cause of acne, go ahead and grab yourself a box of your favourite brand.

Extensive scientific research has officially ruled out any direct association between acne and your diet.

That being said, certain foods may cause your existing acne to flare up, and if you experience a breakout after eating a specific food, you should eliminate it from your diet. However, foods of any kind are NOT the cause of acne, but can be a trigger that causes existing acne to get worse.

In truth, in order to manage your acne, it's vital that you do understand the primary influences that cause your acne to worsen or flare up, however chocolate and birth control pills, among the other ridiculous villains listed on acne forums and community sites are NOT responsible for your acne problems.

Myth #2: Acne Is Caused By Poor Hygiene

If dealing with acne wasn't difficult enough, there's a widespread belief that acne is actually caused by poor hygiene.

Worse, those suffering from acne that believe that they are responsible for not having cleaned the area frequently enough, can actually make their acne worse simply by over washing or consistently scrubbing their skin with abrasive material or scrubs.

Acne is not caused by surface skin oils, dirt or because you haven't showered often enough.

Vigorous washing will actually irritate your skin and leave you feeling worse than before, so put the scrub bush away for good.

Myth #3: Acne Is Caused By Cosmetics

This has been a myth that I myself believed in at one time, tossing out all cosmetics, make up and facial creams believing that they were responsible for my excessive acne.

While the over-use of makeup can clog your pores, the use of cosmetics is not responsible for your acne, and dermatologists have indicated that even oil-based cosmetics have no direct association with acne flare ups.

Myth #4: Acne Is Contagious

Ever feel as if everyone around you is repulsed by your acne, and worried that it will somehow leap off your skin and land on theirs?

You're not alone.

It's a common myth that acne is contagious and that by touching areas of your body that contain acne and then touching someone else, you will be able to 'transfer' acne to them.

Acne is not contagious, period.

Myth #5: Acne Is Caused By Oily Skin

This one is a VERY common myth and in theory, it sounds like it might actually make sense, right?

Those with acne typically have oily skin, however, oily skin is not the cause of acne, it is a symptom of acne.

Myth #6: Acne Is Caused By Stress

Stress is a part of daily life, and over the years it's been associated with causing acne flare-ups or breakouts.

Sure, stress takes its toll on our minds and bodies, but stress is never a direct cause of acne, but rather a contributor in breakouts and existing acne becoming temporarily worse.

When you experience a bout of stress, a hormone is released called "cortisol". Cortisol can aggravate existing acne causing flare ups, however once again, it only affects existing acne and does not cause someone with no previous acne to suddenly break out.

Note: Stress relief medication can also cause flare-ups and breakouts so be sure to discuss this with your doctor if you are currently taking stress management medication of any kind.

Myth #7: You Can Eliminate Acne By Sun Tanning

Before you ever attempt to tan your acne away, understand the effects that tanning has on your skin, and on your acne itself.

Tanning can actually intensify your acne, causing your skin to lose moisture and become exceptionally dry. When this happens, you may experience itchy, raw skin with consistent breakouts.

In addition, if you use suntan lotions to protect your skin from excessive tanning, the chemicals contained within these creams can cause your pores to become blocked, further complicating your acne problems.

Tanning may cause your skin to appear clearer, but it's only ever a temporary solution and not a permanent cure.

Myth #8: There is no cure for Acne

Many people believe that it's natural to have acne and that there is little you can do to prevent it, much less eliminate it. Others believe that acne will simply disappear on its own.

Both of these ideas are, for the most part, untrue.

It's possible to outgrow acne, especially if you are suffering from it as a teenager, however if you are still dealing with acne as an adult, you need to take steps to minimize and finally eliminate acne through natural remedies and treatments. Acne, in adult life, rarely disappears without proper treatment.

When it comes to the notion that there is no such thing as a cure for acne, in truth, following a simple strategy focusing on managing and eliminating acne, you can live an acne free life, without ever having to spend money on costly procedures, chemical aids, or prescription drugs.
