Chapter 2 - A Fair Warning

Recently, I experienced a phenomenon that is eye opening. I was communicating via email and exchanging some of my opinions and ideas with a friend who is a liberal and progressive. What happened is that he completely miss-understood what I was trying to say. There is a clear disconnect between the words I wrote and his perception of what I was saying. I realized then and there that people do not just read and take away the ideas presented. They actually impose a pre-conception bias to what they see and read and I believe this is happening sub-consciously. It is almost like he is reading my words through a filtered lens and some words have connotations that were not intended and therefore a miss communication occurs. Another example of this phenomenon is during the reader's email section at the end of The O'Reilly Factor TV show. Bill will often read two comments back to back of people that took complete opposite reaction to one of his interviews. They saw the same show and yet they interpreted exactly opposite views. Here is my fair warning. When you are reading my opinions, please don't add more to it than what I wrote. Here is a hint. If you catch your self saying this idea is ridiculous, just stop and go back and re-read my words carefully. If you still have the same reaction, that's ok too but be aware that I may not be proposing what you think I said.

Its an all too common phenomenon. Often referred to the 'Rock Man Syndrome' where one sees what they want to see, and hear what they want to hear. I've experienced it as an affliction all my life, and I'm not alone.

Thanks for pointing it out!
