Chapter 33 - The Abortion issue

The right to an abortion is one of the most contentious areas that dominate our political and cultural discourse. The problem I have is why is it so important in 2006? Back in the early 1970s,
Abortion was a problem for teenagers who got pregnant and didn't want to keep the baby. Because it was illegal at the time, people were forced into back alleys and many abuses took place. We got that. The Supreme Court decided in 1973 that abortion is a right of women under the Fourteenth amendment of the Constitution. Whether you agree with this decision or not, it is the law of the land now. We have come a long way since 1973. Technology has provided us with the pill and the morning after pill and all kinds of contraception and prevention. Why in 2006 is there a need to perform an abortion? Everyone agrees that abortion should be a last resort and a rare procedure. It is traumatic for the mother as well as for the fetus. Why is it so important to have this right? And why do we still have so many abortions performed in 2006? You have to question the motives of some organizations such as Planned Parenthood and National Organization of Women. They are willing to sacrifice all other issues to preserve this "right".

Personally, I am against the practice of abortion both on moral and religious grounds. However, I would not wish to impose this on all our citizens. It is time to revisit this issue for the fact that our public policy should promote the common good as dictated by the preamble of the Constitution. Given all that was spend on Sex education, pregnancy prevention and condom distribution, have we really got the result we want?
The right to late term abortion is an extreme indication of how far we have drifted from the original decision. Why would some woman want to carry a fetus to almost full term and then decide to pull the plug on this life? Common sense tells me there is something wrong with this picture.
