Why I Chose To Work From Home

In this lens I tell why I chose to become a work at home parent. What the benefits are and some of the hurtles we had to jump. But mostly I tell how lucky my wife and I are for doing so. How happier parents we have become, and how are kids survived their childhood to become young adults.

What Sparked Our Decision?

Was it poor grades, crime in the neighborhood, drugs?

Although all three of the above examples are good reasons for a parent to be concerned. They did not contribute to the reason I chose to work from home. But the fear of them did. Now I must confess the grades were not perfect, but they did improve over time. This is one of the many advantages you get for working at home. You get to see their home work right away, and you get to help them with it. Now although my back ground is in nursing and my wife's is in retail management I have always had a niche for sales. So I figured it would be easy to work from home since there were so many work at home offers on the internet. But why work at home? Well this is why. We had two children 3 1/2 years apart. They had been in day care since about 6 weeks of age. They were both growing up fast and we were missing most of their daily achievements. Hearing their stories days later,or hearing them from secondhand sources really tugs at your heart. They were now at the ages 12 & 8 and they wanted to and thought they could make their own decisions. My wife and I had not realized we had begun to raised two head strung and independent kids. Although this is a good trait and you want your kids to be able to take care of themselves, this was a self defense mechanism they had acquired from school and daycare. We did not realize what was happening right before our own eyes. We were so busy working to build our so called future we almost let our real future pass us by. Fortunately we caught ours just in time. So many other parents have not. My wife had been with her company at that time for about 12 yrs and her benefits were good ,so we decided I would take on the stay at home dad role. We used up a lot of our savings the first year trying new home based businesses. Explaining to the kids having less money was going to be a good thing in the long run, because we were going to be able to spend more time together did not resonate at first. I soon established an EBAY business and combined it with a local flea market and things began to fall in place. I was seeing the kids to and from school and helping them with their home work more effectively instead of the 30 minutes I might of had with my previous job. It took about a year to turn their grades and attitudes around but it was well worth it. My wife and I had to make sacrifices also,we had to change our attitudes as well. We started clipping coupons shopping bent and dent stores and buying everything off of clearance racks. We cut our cable bill in half, decreased the number of cell phones, and stopped going out to dinner. It was hard but what we got in return was way more than any amount of money we might have made. We got our kids back and set them on a course that would ultimately benefit them and society. So many kids get left behind because their parents just don't realize that they are unwittingly neglecting them and their future. The two parent work force has caused so many children to turn to others, or turn to other methods to fulfill there needs. Now I am not saying it can't be done. Some parents feel they both have to work. What I am saying is those that do, take a chance on loosing out on so much of their kids childhood, and take the risk of not being able to relate to them as they get older. That was my biggest fear. So by doing what we did and making the sacrifices we did we have been blessed way be on belief. My daughter is now 18 and at the end of her freshman year at Florida State. My son is 15 and at the end of his freshman year of high school. Both with great futures and great outlooks on their lives ahead. My wife and I would like to believe we played a big part in their evolution from childhood into adulthood because of the choice we made. If for any reason you see your kids heading down the wrong path make the ultimate sacrifice. Stay at home and be a parent.
