A Selection Of Seeds

Container Vegetable Gardening

Don't be fooled. You don't have to have a large garden to grow your own fantastic fruits, flowers and vegetables. Several years ago I moved into a larger house, unfortunately the house didn't have the big garden I wanted but I did have a back yard. I have converted that back yard into a thriving container vegetable garden and you can do the same.

There are a lot of vegetables that are suitable for growing in containers. Some are tomatoes, lettuces, cucumbers, peppers, peas, radish, carrots, onions, shallots and more. It is usually just as easy as or maybe even easier to grow vegetables in containers than it is to grow vegetables outdoors in the open ground.

With the weather becoming more and more unpredictable yearly it is continually becoming harder to grow many vegetables. When growing in containers you can fight against the weather by bringing containers indoors in really bad weather, moving the containers to sunnier places in the garden as well as being easier to control watering.

There are literally thousands of benefits to growing vegetables in containers, I would love to post them all here but I know that would bore you, right?

On this lense and my website I will be teaching you everything you need to know about gardening in containers. If you visit my blog be sure to sign up to my newsletter to!

Growing Tomatoes In Containers

Tomatoes are the vegetable that everyone likes to grow. Here are a few simple steps that you should follow which will ensure you grow perfect tomatoes.

First of all you will need to select a variety to grow. For this example I am going to use Tomato Tumbling Red. This variety is a small, compact variety which produces a number of tasty tomatoes throughout the summer season.

Tomato seeds should be sown indoors on a windowsill March - April. Sow several seeds in a 3 inch pot of multi-purpose compost, covering the seeds lightly with compost. The compost should be kept moist until the seedlings begin to show.

Once the seedlings are a 4-5 inches high you can pot them on into larger containers or hanging baskets. When doing this you should select the strongest seedlings first and being careful not to disturb the roots.

When growing a bush variety like 'Tumbling Red' no support will be required. If you are growing a cordon variety you will need to support the plants with canes.

Watering regularly will be required. Tomatoes that are not watered enough will become brown and may die.

Begin picking the fruits when they are fully ripe, this is usually in August but can differ slightly with the variety. To pick the tomato you should simply hold the tomato in your hand and break it of the plant. The tomato should come off the plant easily.

Now, Enjoy!

Nice lens! I like to grow lettuce, herbs, and greens in containers. They seem to do better than fruiting plants like peppers and tomatoes.

I grow eggplants on pots! I have cabbages, too, in many different containers but I'm not really sure if i'm doing the right thing but thanks for your lens, at least, I have the proper idea now! Thanks for sharing! by the way, in case you're using personal checks, you can buy them cheap online! got the idea from my friend who ordered her own Betty Boop personal checks and she saved money with it!

Nice little site. Lots of good links. I grow on my balcony (Sweet Corn, Pole Beans, Summer Squash and Tomatoes) It's a mess out there and love it. My corn grows great in containers despite what experts say. Thanks again and here's my website below.
