CONTEMPT (LE MEPRIS) - EXPLICIT CONTENT IN LE MEPRIS
Director: Jean-Luc Godard, Cast: Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli
CONTEMPT (LE MEPRIS) : TOP 10 REASONS TO WATCH THE FILM
1. A powerful satire, Le Mepris (contempt godard) bubbles with symbolic connotations and emotional delusions, and a sense of elation which echoes through cinematic history.
2. This is probably the finest example of the "temperamental" genre of films! Le Mepris (contempt godard) is intense in every way, and the underlying tension never stops, despite a sometimes very misleading surface level quietness which eventually breaks into stretches of twists and turns.
3. The film truly examines what is flesh and blood, and in many ways what is real. Godard thought this could be performed only by Bardot, and for the most part, he was right.
4. Another theme you will note is that the coherence and chaos are falling apart and reuniting effortlessly, again and again within the structure of a film within a film. A superb production that highlights the innate falsehood of cinema as a whole.
5. The film's opening scene is presented as an unusual travesty of the cinema business with mild but eye catching nudity. Interestingly, this scene was shot after Godard considered the film finished, at the insistence of the American co-producers. You can watch the film just for that opening scene - Brigitte Bardot is sensuality personified.
6. While founded on Moravia's marvelous story of the gradual alienation between a husband and wife, Le Mepris (contempt godard) also draws deliberate parallels with aspects of Godard's own life.
7. Also to be noted - the film holds a powerful discussion of Dante - particularly of Canto XVI of Inferno, about Ulysses' last foreboding voyage beyond the Pillars of Hercules - and Friedrich Hderlin's poem, "Dichterberuf" ("The Poet's Vocation").
8. Brigitte Bardot is absolutely phenomenal in this film. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni were both considered and discarded by Godard before Bardot was chosen for the role. And what a justice she did to that choice!
9. Make a note of a special sequence in the movie - Piccoli and Bardot wandering through their apartment alternately arguing and reconciling. Their arguments are ranging and vitriolic, and their body languages are simply immaculate. Godard filmed the scene as an extended series of tracking shots, in natural light and in near real-time.
10. Le Mepris (godard mepris) digs into its characters and reveals just what troubles Godard about Hollywood and conventional movie making - you have to watch the film to understand how deeply his messages are embedded in the film!
