CMSIf you have a dynamic website which you update on regular basis then you need to have a Content Management System (CMS) in place. With increasing emphasis on dynamic content, regular update of any website becomes essential and that is where CMS comes into picture.

In this lens I would describe the CMS and various types of CMS available today.

Content Management Systems

A Content Management System allows you to edit the website, pages, and other parts of website on fly. You don't need to be expert in HTML/CSS to modify the website's content. And not only that it also allows to have more features in the website via plugin/modules or extensions.

Theoritically CMS are suppose to be easy to use so that even a non technical person can use it easily but practically it is not the case. At some point of time you need to know basic html/css without which you can utilize the full power of CMS.

Some of these CMSs I'll be describing here, for a complete list of open source CMS visit CMS review web site which I've just launch to be a comprehensive single point source for all the CMSs.

Open Source Content Management Systems
There are so many open source CMS that I lost count of them. Most of these CMSs are under GNU licence and you can use them without paying any fee. Most of these CMSs are base don PHP/mySQL platform.

Drupal CMS

Drupal is undoubtedly the best open source CMS package still functional and thanks to the community support it keeps on growing leaps and bounds. However not all is rosy with Drupal. It is the most difficult to customize and use and certainly it is not for a non technical person. However once it is configured and person using is trained it can become as easy as any other easiest CMS.

Drupal installation is easy as with any other open source CMS which are in php/mySQL however customization, configuration and modules tweaking is for experts only.

Drupal SEO

The best part of CMS is its SEO module which is the most complex SEO modules I've ever seen in any PHP based script and luckily it works all the time.

Drupal Theme Design

You will certainly need a new drupal theme deign which is 2 step process. In first step you have to get the web design done as per your choice and in 2nd step you need a Drupal themer to convert design into Drupal theme.

Joomla CMS

Joomla is another popular open source CMS but not as popular as Drupal. Joomla has a better admin interface than Drupal's and it is also easy to use. you will not require to know any html/css or coding to use it. It is just matter of familiarizing with Joomla Admin interface and once you have done so it would become easier to use.

The biggest problem with Joomla is it is not so free and most of plugins/modules are commercial. Also Joomla has not as much community support as Drupal has.

XOOPS

XOOPS CMS is not so popular but it is still one of very effective CMS. XOOPS can be used in a variety of ways. Admin interface is user friendly.

Some of the biggest shortcomings of XOOPS are

  • You can't create a static page from Admin. It sounds to be strange but this is the fact. To create a static page you have to copy exiting page and add some code in it to get it working.

  • Lack of functional mod _rewrite/SEO module

  • Modules are not coherent and each module is separate with each other

Commercial Content Management Systems

There are a number of commercial CMS available in the market which turns out to be too costly for individual or small business usage. The details of most of these CMSs are not openly available so we can't say for sure what lies behind the curtain.

I, personally, have never used any of these commercial CMSs so can't comment on them.

If you have used any commercial CMS and would like to provide review on it then feel free to do so on commercial CMS review website.
