How Do You Control Moles?

Moles are one of the worst problems for anyone who desires a nice, green lawn, a beautiful flower garden or a productive vegetable patch. Sadly, many of the products and techniques touted for controlling moles are gimmicks that don't work.

It is possible to control moles and end the frustration caused by the destructive creatures. Same goes for gophers, too, by the way. And you don't have to spend tons of money and time to do it.

Control Moles That Destroy Lawns and Gardens

Stop Moles "The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home."

Thus begins that charming old children's book, The Wind In The Willows. In the real world, unfortunately, moles do not present quite so pleasant a picture. The havoc they wreak on lawns and gardens is staggering.

To control moles, you need to learn their habits and how to effectively combat them.

Control Moles to Prevent Horror Stories Like This

Stop Moles A man named Dave, who lives in California, reported that he and his wife were at the end of their rope in the fight against moles. "Our yard was a complete disaster area. I counted over 27 mounds in the front yard alone." That was from just 3 moles, he later discovered!

After Dave and his wife found a method to control moles that worked for them, they were completely free of the problem forever. They've since re-seeded their lawn and say it looks great now.

Three moles - 27 mounds! And I've heard of even worse.

To Control Moles, Start With Knowledge

Stop Moles A few things you might not know about moles:
  • A grouping of moles is known as a labor of moles. Male moles are called boars and female moles are called sows.
  • Moles mostly eat earthworms and other small creatures. Some can and do eat creatures as large as a mouse!
  • Contrary to widespread belief, moles do not eat plant roots. However, their burrowing activity undermines roots, resulting in damage or death to the plant. This is one of the reasons it's so important to control moles in lawns and gardens.

Common Ways to Control Moles

Stop MolesPeople have tried many things to control moles.

Smoke bombs have been used to try to drive moles out from their underground burrows. There are also poisons that are meant to kill these pests. One type of poison actually contains an ingredient that turns into phosphine gas inside the mole tunnels. Needless to say, the use of poisons can be risky, especially where you have pets or children around. And some poisons may be banned in your particular locality.

Some people try flooding the moles' burrows with water to force them out. This might work, temporarily, but the amount of water required is wasteful and often ends up damaging a yard as much or more than the moles do.

Some homeowners and gardeners go so far as to watch for a mole hill moving along the ground. They will then stab the hill with a pitchfork or other sharp implement in an attempt to impale the little culprit!

The best solution if you have yard or garden moles is usually some kind of trap.

Control Moles With A Trap

Stop MolesThere are at present more than 60 different mole traps and gopher traps being sold. Some are much better than others.

There's one trap that, when used with the correct technique will trap a mole or a gopher every time, without fail. According to the individual who perfected this technique to control moles, you can literally start clearing your property of moles (and gophers) in a few minutes. More than 10,000 homeowners worldwide have already used the technique to get rid of moles. (See the "big arrow" link below for more information on this.)
