Cool Science Fair Projects - Tips to doing a great science project Step 2 - Topic Research

When it comes to researching a topic for science fair projects, there are certain tips that can help most students learn a ton of information - and stay organized. No matter what level of research skills you already have, these tips can help to keep you on track during the research process...and they can keep you from getting too overwhelmed if you're a beginning researcher! Read this article for some must-know tips about researching for your project.

Getting Started

Science fair projects are not just about experiments; they are also about digging in deep to do some intensive research into a particular topic of interest and narrowing down your interests to one particular topic that you will study. While science projects may focus on the actual hands-on experiment, no project would be truly complete and worthwhile unless a student takes the time to learn about that which he or she is experimenting with.

The very first step that students should take with their science fair projects is to carve out some quality time for researching potential topics that interest them. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this research time:

Think

Doesn't this seem like the most obvious tip possible? For some students, actually taking time to think on their own about what they would like to learn (and not just what a teacher wants a student to learn), can be tough. In order to decide on a topic you will enjoy, think about what fields of science appeal to you most.

For example, if you enjoy kite flying, then you may be cut out for an experiment in physics. If you enjoy eating candy, then why not ask yourself what the affect of candy is on your body and plan an experiment to find out? Think about what scientific things you like; you have permission!

Take Notes

Taking notes is an important part of your science fair project. In the beginning, these notes will help you to determine which topic to study. During your experiment, these notes will help you to gather data and understand the experiment better.

One of the best ways I have found to take notes is by keeping all of my notes related to my experiment in one journal. I create separate tabs for each section. For example, I might have separate sections for my questions, observations, knowledge that I gained through research, interviews with experts, and even a section for things that disappointed me about the experiment.

I do my best to follow the steps I've outlined for my science project. By the way, getting a free copy of Easy Steps to Award-Winning Science Fair Projects will help you through your own project and may help you to learn more about what things you may need to take notes on

When it comes time for me to write my science report, I always know where all of my notes are. Each section is important to my science report - even the section where I write about my disappointments because this section helps me to create my conclusion.

Repeat, if Needed

When it comes to science, it is impossible to do the same experiment or research twice. Variables and conditions always change with experiments, and knowledge that you acquire always changes with each new time you research something. I can't tell you how many times I've found different results from what I thought was the same project and how many times I've reread a book and found new information.

However, one of the best ways to know how to use these results effectively is to research the area of science that you are studying. If there is a surprising result that you did not learn in your first round of research, then repeat your research. Go back to the books whenever something surprises you; you never know what you may have missed...or discovered!
