Cool Science Toys and Gifts
Science toys are cool no matter how young or old you are! I'm a scientist and science writer plus I have four kids, so I have a sort of fascination with science toys, both for myself and for other family members. Here's a look at some of the coolest science toys I have come across. Also, be sure to add your own suggestions and recommendations to this lens to help other people enjoy cool science.
Cool Science Toys
Crystals are cool science toys, plus you can use them as decorations. It's a lot of fun to grow your own crystals or to break open geodes.
Robots Are Cool
Robots pretty much define 'cool science'. Note that science toys can be practical as well as fun. You know you need a robot vacuum cleaner. I do, anyway.
Animal Habitats Are Cool
Chemistry Toys
I'm a little biased, but I think chemistry science toys might just be the coolest.
Volcanic Eruptions and Plate Tectonics
Geology is Cool Science
You can make your own volcano at home using baking soda and vinegar, but the beauty of getting a kit is you get a re-useable cinder cone too! Another difference I have noticed is that volcanoes from kits tend to have brighter lava.

- So are the chemistry kits of today pretty tame compared to those of old? We remember our childhood chemistry kits having some pretty gnarly stuff in them that probably wouldn't get past the lawyers these days. Also recommended: radiometer (simple, but still pretty cool), those circuit kits with the spring connectors (think it's a Radio Shack thing), and just about anything from Think Geek...
And the best cool toy of all (though a little more expensive): a microscope and a nice selection of slides (see, e.g., Carolina Biological).
