What Is Cafepress?

Its a wonderful site that allows people to set up a store and upload copyright free images and designs and place them onto T's, Mugs, Mousepads,Sweatshirts,Posters, Stamps, Coasters and MUCH MORE! Cafepress About Page

Cafepress says it best with, "If you dream it, sell it"

Regardless of how silly you think a design looks, either it being yours or another shopkeepers, there will be someone out there that will most likely buy it. There is a market for EVERYTHING, you just have to pursue that niche market.

So "if you dream it" regardless of how silly it is, you can "sell it"

I encourage anyone to set up a shop, even if you don't want to sell things, its a great way for you to design and create your own products.

How do I make money?

The base prices seem high...

Its easy to make money at Cafepress, even with the high prices.

A Basic T-shirt has a base price of $8.99, this is the amount that Cafepress is charging. To make a profit you then mark it up by the amt that you wish to earn, many Shopkeepers have awesome designs and can easily sell it with a markup of 5 or 6 bucks.

Keep in mind, its not a "t-shirt" that you are selling, its a ONE OF A KIND design. If you have a OOAK design, i.e not clipart from a purchased CD that 10,000.00 other shopkeepers also have, you can and will be able to sell it.

and...Part of the fun/addiction of cafepress IS working to find that GREAT design.

Merchandise Pricing (taken directly from the Cafepress site)

* There are no out-of-pocket setup, printing or inventory costs with CafePress.com. Each product has a Base Price that includes all the fees associated with selling. You simply markup the base price to come up with the retail price. When you sell an item, we keep the base price and you keep the markup.
* We send you a commission check for the markup amount once per month.
* CafePress.com Base Prices cover product creation, customer service, transaction management, returns/exchanges and online store maintenance.
* Note: An additional 5% transaction fee will be charged on markup amounts greater than $15. For example, if you markup an item by $20, an additional fee of .25 will be charged (that is 5% of the $5 over the $15 markup limit).
* The customer picks up the tab for shipping costs.

What about Inventory?

Do I have to buy my own products?

You are never required to buy your own products. Many shopkeepers do buy their items just to get an idea of how it looks after its printed.

Its not actually "your" inventory,

Cafepress has "blank products", i.e T-shirts, Mugs, Cards etc with nothing on them. You upload your logo and/or designs to be placed on these products.

When a customer purchases your finished design, Cafepress pulls one of their blank products and applies your design to it.

And you can make even MORE money thru the Volume Bonus Tiers

Volume Sales Bonus

The more you sell - the more you earn! You will earn bonuses once you sell over $250 in base price sales per month. The volume bonus is calculated in stepped up tiers based on the total amount of base price sales you make each month.

Below is the Volume Sales Bonus schedule in stepped up tiers (based on monthly base price sales):

No bonus for the first $250 in base price sales
Tier 1: 7% bonus for base price sales between $250.01 - $1,000
Tier 2: 15% bonus for base price sales between $1,000.01 - $5,000
Tier 3: 20% bonus for base price sales between $5,000.01 - $10,000
Tier 4: 22% bonus for base price sales above $10,000.01 in monthly base price sales

How does the "stepped up" tier bonus work?
As your total base price sales increase, you earn bonuses based on the amount you sell over certain thresholds. The first threshold is at $250. Once you sell over $250 in base price sales, you will receive a bonus of 7% for each dollar of base price sales earned over $250 but less than $1,000. Each dollar of base prices sales over $1,000 but less than $5,000 earns 15% bonus. And so on...

For example, if you made a total of $1,101.01 in base price sales for a single month, your bonus will look like this:
The first $250 of your base price sales will not earn a bonus
Your base price sales from $250.01 - $1,000.00, totaling $749.99 earns 7% ($52.50)
Your base price sales from $1,000.01 - $1,101.01, totaling $101.00 earns 15% ($15.15)
Volume Sales Bonus for $1,101.01 = $67.65

note: You must contact the artist/uploader at sxc if you intend to use any of their images for "print on demand" i.e cafepress, zazzle, lulu etc.

Credit to the photographer is required 99.9% of the time, I put any credits to the sxc photographer in my product descriptions.

Every so often if you have given proper credit, you will see traffic to your shop from the photographer. You can pretty well assume it is them, for instance, Betty Jo Jones gave you permission to use her SXC images. You give Betty Jo Jones a credit in your description. Betty Jo Jones then goes to her favorite search engine, types in her name. and follows the link to your product. (if you have a statcounter, sitemeter code)

note: when I use something from sites such as this, I give credit to them in the product description.
