Corn Hole | The New Backyard Experience

Corn Hole a.k.a. "bean bag toss", "tailgate toss", or "whatever you want to call it" has become one of the fastest growing outdoor recreational games in the past few years.

Here, you can find virtually everything related to the sport of cornhole. Whether your new to the game and looking for rules, or if your a seasoned vet looking for custom equipment, you can find it here.

Rules & Gameplay

This is a quick breakdown of the basic rules for Corn Hole.

First off, you need to under stand the layout of the Corn Hole "court", here is a image explaining it best. As you can see, the two platforms are laid 27 feet apart from base to base, and the person pitching the bag must stay behind the "foul line" for it to be considered a fair shot.

You can play either singles or doubles. Meaning two or four players, teams or singles. When a corn bag is tossed, it can do one of three things.

It can land and stop on the board, resulting in one point.
It can land in the hole, resulting in 3 points.
Or, it can land on the ground, resulting in 0 points.
At the end of each round, you total up each teams points and take the difference to decide how many points are awarded. For example: If team A puts 1 bag in the hole and team B puts one bag on the board, Team A only scores 2 points (3 points from team A) - (1 point team B). You play until one of the teams reaches 21. As far as pitching rotation in game, the team that scored the previous round, pitches FIRST on the next round.

These are very simple corn hole rules I hope you enjoy!

Build Your Own Corn Hole Set

Be ready for your next game of Cornhole or that tournament or tailgate party with a Cornhole game you have built yourself. Believe it or not, a set of boards is probably much easier for you to take on as opposed to a set of Cornhole Bags.

It is not hard to build a set and it won't take long either. In a few evenings or a weekend you can have a new Cornhole set ready to use.

You will need these things to build Cornhole Sets:

Power drill/screwdriver
Jigsaw
2 sheets of plywood 24"x36"
4 2x4's - 24" long for the frame
4 2x4's - 32" long for the frame
4 2x4'a - 13.5" long for the legs
Screws
Drawing compass
Ruler
Pencil
Paint: a high gloss paint works well because the glossy surface will allow the corn hole bags to slide right into the hole. (Maybe!)
You will need to start with 2 of the 24" pieces of wood and position them on the shorter sides of the plywood and then place the 32" pieces in between those on the long sides of the plywood.

Line all these pieces of wood up and use the screws to screw the frame together. You will not want to screw the plywood into the frame until the frame is assembled.

When you have the frame put together you can screw the plywood top onto the frame.

Now it's time to make the hole. Measure 12" in from either side and 9" down from the top, finding the center point of the hole. Now use your compass and draw a circle that is 6" in diameter.

Attach the legs at the back closest to the hole. Screw through the frame into the legs but do not go through the platform.

Sand and paint and your platform is ready to use. Now you know how to make your very own Cornhole Boards.

Build A Tailgate Toss Set

Tailgate Toss is a smaller version of Corn Hole

Tailgate Toss Games are really pretty simple to build and are very similar in construction to a regular corn hole board.

Here is a list of what you will need to build a Tailgate Toss set

You will need a 48"x48"x1/2" sheet of plywood. The thicker the wood the more sturdy it will be.
4 - 2×4x8's
screws

Cut the sheet of plywood in two so you have 2- 2 foot by 4 foot pieces.

Cut your 2×4's. You will need 48 long for the sides and 21 long for the fronts and backs

now lay a frame of 2 48 boards with two 21 boards in between them and lay the plywood on top.

Make sure all the edges are pretty flush and then screw down the plywood to the 2×4's

Then from one end of the Tailgate Toss board measure down 9" somewhere close to center and put a line then from a side measure over 12" and put a line. You need to draw the lines out until they cross. That point is center for your hole. Now center that with your 6" hole saw and drill your hole. If you dont have a hole saw then measure out 3" around the cross you made and use a jig saw.

Now the Legs, Cut 2 12" 2×4s and then fasten them to the inside frame at the end with the hole

Make Your Own Bags

You can purchase corn hole bags or you can make them. Making corn hole bags is not too difficult, but you will need a sewing maching.

You need to use a heavy fabric like duck cloth, so your bags do not fall aprt. A light-weight material will not last and there are other fabrics that may look nice but will not be appropriate. You should avoid fabrics that fray or have an open weave.

You need to buy enough fabric so you can cut it into 16 7x7 squares. Place two pieces together and using a sewing machine, sew a ½" seam around the sides of the bag, leaving an opening in the middle of one side. Turn the square inside out and fill 1 pound of corn. You can use a plastic bottle to funnel the corn into your bags.

After you have filled the corn bag hole you can fold the open seam in and stitch with your machine. Make sure you have a good seal so the bags will not open.

Repeat this process until you have a set of 8 bags and your ready to play.

Spin, Flop, Chuck...

Different ways to toss your bags.

In my experience the best way to throw the bag is to keep it as flat as possible when it hits the board. If you watch the "pros" throw, you can see that they all use this method. In an amatuer setting, having a consistant delivery will usually be good enough.

There are all kinds of ways to throw a bag in cornhole. Some of them work better than others, its all about what works best for you. So, give these a try....

1. Single Fold - Exactly how it sounds. Fold the bag in half and give it a toss.

2. The Frisbee - Hold the bag flat and spin it like a frisbee as you throw it. This type of throw tends to make the bag slide more.

3. The Flop - Basically, you keep the bag flat and try to rotate the bag end over end with the bag smacking the board with very little roll.

4. The Wad - Wad the bag up in your hand and throw it with high arc to land softly on the board.
