Considering your Options
You're in the process of buying a new home and you've had to give up your apartment because you could not sign a lease for only a month. Now you have to make a decision as to where to stay during that month. Friends and family members simply don't have the room for you to stay with you family so it's time to think about your options.
About this Lens
What staying at a hotel means
For you and your family one option of course is to stay in a hotel while you are waiting for your home to be completed. This is a possible option, however there are 'hidden' expenses involved in staying in a hotel that you might not even have considered. These include:Laundry - regardless of whether you're in a hotel that is designed for short or long term stays, you'll find laundry facilities - unfortunately these are typically pay for laundry - these fees can add up over one month;
Meals - it's true that no matter where you're staying you'll have to deal with meals. However, most hotels have regulations that prohibit cooking in rooms - while many extended stay hotels do offer microwave ovens you may find yourself eating a lot of microwaveable dinners - which can be costly and not very nourishing;
Taxes - hotels have this wonderful way of stacking all types of little fees onto your stay which include local, county and state fees. Unfortunately these can add up to nearly ΒΌ of your daily room rate which mounts up very quickly;
Children - if you have children, chances are you're going to need more than one hotel room and if they're very small children you're going to have them cooped up most of the day inside a very small area which means they're going to be restless. Hotels regardless of their facilities are not really geared for children
What makes corporate housing attractive
Fortunately for you, the Corporate Temporary Housing market is growing by leaps and bounds each year. As a matter of fact, in 2006 alone, it was a 2.5 billion dollar industry. After comparing the apartment to an extended stay hotel, many business travelers are turning to corporate housing because they can offer you the comfort and convenience of home. They are usually completely furnished apartments, they are located in middle- to upper-scale residential areas, they come stocked with furniture and necessary housewares, and utilities are also included in your monthly rent. Many of these properties, in addition to the convenience of month to month leases, also offer voice mail or answering services, maid services (and how can you say no to that?), and a score of other services designed to make your stay more comfortable. Additionally, unlike a hotel, these fully furnished temporary apartments do not have the usual hotel fees as an unwelcome surprise.
Job Transfer Benefit
Versus Renting a Home
Typical rental properties can range in price from $600 to $1,000 per month (and higher) in major cities. Moreover, you are responsible for all of your own utilities, furniture, furnishings, and other necessities. Using corporate housing will cost between $1600 and $2700 a month generally, but these fully-furnished apartments provide you with everything (down to the dishes) that you and your family will need until you find a more permanent home, and the cost is often worth it. Temporary corporate housing apartments are typically operated by a management company, and each time a new person moves into one of these units they are thoroughly cleaned and inspected to ensure that your experience is a positive one.
What is Corporate Housing?
Most corporate housing companies have a fixed number of available apartment units that they manage in the city they are found in. These apartment units are fully-furnished and corporate housing companies constantly move clients/employees in and out of the furnished apartments, taking time to clean between occupants. Local corporate housing providers can be located by doing an internet search for the city in which you need temporary housing and the term "corporate housing." National corporate housing companies provide corporate housing services in more than just their respective locales, as the name implies. National corporate housing providers are very beneficial in managing military or corporate contracts as well as housing inventories which involve occupants of temporary homes in more than one city.
