Looking for a theme for your costume party? Why not use London Underground Stations?
If you had always thought of us Brits as being mad, this lens will no doubt prove the point!
One of the more unusual themes which crops up every so often, is that of the London Underground. The theme itself sounds like something thought up over a few (Cock)Fosters lagers. Yet when you think about it, perhaps over your Morning(ton) Croissant (Crescent), it offers a great scope for inventiveness and innovation.
Even if you don't live or work in London, the Underground or 'Tube' is world-famous, its map is a design classic and most people know the famous sites and streets of the capital, even if there isn't always a tube station to match!
There are currently around 250 different stations on the London Underground network - there have been more. At one time, in the 1880s, the 'Underground' stretched as far as Windsor (sharing a line with the Great Western Railway) and had 340 stations on the network.
For all of you that are not based in the UK, you'll probably read this lens and wonder what on earth it is all about. Let me give you a quick explanation...
You are invited to a costume party and the theme is 'London Underground Stations'. You have to look at the Underground map and find a station that you can dress up as. Some stations, like Kings Cross are fairly easy to work out, you wear an Elvis costume (The King) and wear or hold a cross. Others are a bit harder, for example there is a famous carnival held every year at Notting Hill, so a carnival costume would be fine for Notting Hill Gate. Wembley is where our national football team play, so you could wear a football kit - get the idea?
You can either give your guests a map of the underground or an actual station. They have to come to the party dressed as that station.
Try thinking about the New York Subway, or whatever is local to you. Can you start to think of how you could dress up as some of the stations? If you get some ideas, pop them in the comment box. If I get enough I will put them on another lens.
I'd like to know what you think.
Please complete both polls, this one at the beginning of the lens and the other one at the end.
Thanks very much, Adele
Some Costume Ideas

There are a few easy options when it comes to creating costumes to match Underground Station names, e.g. Angel, Blackfriars and Canary Wharf (for Tweety Pie fans). For others, a well-known character can represent the station - Sherlock Holmes can represent Baker Street; Shakespeare, Stratford; Napoleon, Wellington (or even Abba) for Waterloo and Queen Victoria for her namesake terminus and Tube interchange. For the most part, however it is down to some lateral thinking and creativity: Here are a few of our suggestions:
For Warren Street, some kind of Rabbit costume, perhaps a Bunny Girl or the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.
Oxford Circus you can choose from a selection of clown costumes and team this with an academic gown and mortar board.
Greenwich Just wear a green witch costume (see it is easier than you probably first thought!)
Barking can obviously use a dog costume, but if you want something a little more 'mad', you could use a strait-jacket or Hannibal Lector outfit!
For this theme, couples are a little difficult to cater for - perhaps a male in a James Bond tuxedo (Bond Street) could be teamed with a gold-painted girl (as in 'Goldfinger') in a green outfit (Golders Green - although she could also be green in a gold outfit!). Staying with the green option, a green face and/or body-paint can also give you Turnham Green, Greenwich North (Wicked Witch of the North from the Wizard of Oz, with a few icicles round the hat!) and Parsons Green (for the latter you can also have a vicar wearing a 'golf-tee' novelty hat).
I did have a great suggestion from one of my readers who said a good couple combination would be Barbie & Ken (costumes are available to purchase) and you would go as Barbican! You really need to think 'outside the box!'
For those of a sporting frame of mind, there's Wembley and Arsenal for footballers, the Oval for cricketers and anyone for tennis at Wimbledon?

What about a Shakespeare style costume for Stratford?

More Costume Ideas...

Some stations may require props as well as costumes:-
Canada Water - A Canadian Mountie with a watering can.
Shepherd's Bush - A Shepherd costume with crook and either a bushy beard or small plant.
Elephant and Castle - A person in an elephant costume (Grey or Pink!) could carry a Rook chess piece, but some sort of castellated head-dress might be more effective.
Tree costumes may not be the best idea if your venue is a little cramped, but if you've the opportunity to branch out (or you can even just find a tree mask), such an outfit can give you the basis of Kings Oak (Tree costume plus crown) or Gospel Oak (Tree plus (large) vicar's dog-collar or one of those colourful gowns worn by gospel choirs!)
Males are notoriously reluctant to dress up, but most would probably be prepared to wear a pilot's outfit (Airline or Air Ace) and this costume can represent either Heathrow or Hanger Lane (for females, the Stewardess is an alternate option here). For any others who don't want to go for the fully costumed look, just a wig may be sufficient - a rasta/dreadlock wig can work for Brixton, a beehive for High Barnet and a schoolgirl's boater and pigtails (or school cap for males) gives you Grange Hill.

Other Party Tips For This Theme

If you're organising a London Underground party yourself, you might find it an idea to divide the network into sections and allocate different segments to different invitees - this will avoid everyone taking the easy 'Angel' option!
Put a cross with this costume and you have Kings Cross!
We can also offer a few themed food suggestions:
Tufnell Pork balls; Surrey Quiche and East (or West) Ham sandwiches at the buffet with Angel cake, Notting Hill Gate-aux, Swiss Cottage Roll or Victoria Sponge for dessert.

- The underground idea is brilliant. You really don't need to limit your party to the tried and true, the boring and "done." This hub makes you realize that anything is possible!
