Jack-O-Lantern: Halloween Legend of Carved Pumpkin
Halloween Jack-o-lanterns were once made of turnips instead of pumpkins. The legend of the Jack-o-lantern is said to come from a man named Jack who was the town drunk. Jack supposedly tricked the devil into climbing a tree and then carved a cross on the tree's trunk which trapped the devil in the tree. Jack then made the devil promise never to tempt him again before he would let the devil down. When Jack died, he was denied access into Heaven because of his evil ways, and into Hell because he had tricked the devil. The devil did give Jack a single ember to light his way and Jack put the ember in a hollowed out pumpkin.

If an Owl is heard hooting, a person should turn their pockets inside out to protect themselves because Owls swooped down to eat the souls of the dying. Welsh believed that you blow your soul out of your body when you sneeze and that is where the phrase "God Bless You" after a sneeze originated. There are a lot of beliefs about babies born on Halloween. One is that these children could see and speak to ghosts, the gift of second sight and a Halloween born baby will enjoy lifelong protection against evil spirits. An early African practice was to eat a meal in complete silence to encourage spirits to come to the table.
