Cowboy Hats Are Not Just For Cowboys

Cowboy hats, it seems, have invaded popular culture. Look through any of those star magazines. Chances are you'll find one or more of you favorite big and small screen stars wearing one. Look through any fashion magazine, and there's probably a model with a nice looking cowboy hat. Check out the music magazines and your favorite rockers will be on stage with a hat on his head. Of course I won't even mention country music stars.

The fact is, cowboy hats have gone mainstream. That's OK by me. I've loved them ever since I was a small boy in a big northeastern city. And it's not because I overdosed on western movies. Actually I never watched them. I just liked the way they look. I still do. Now it seems like the rest of the United States is starting to catch up.

Even womens cowboy hats are becoming popular, although they still haven't caught up to men. But men had a big head start. There was a time, many years ago, when only men wore cowboy hats. It's because they were a necessity. They were a great way to keep the hot sun off your face. They could also be used to fan the flames on a campfire or perhaps gather water. They were a necessity.

Now cowboy hats are more of a fashion statement and that's fine with me. I love the look. Of course once the designers get into the act the prices go way up. That's why it's best to look for discount cowboy hats. But first you need to decide what kind of cowboy hat you are looking for.

The goal of this lens is to help you make that decision.

Cowboy Hats - Do You Have A Favorite?

Personally, I prefer straw cowboy hats when I work, black leather cowboy hats at all over times. What is your favorite?

You Have Many Choices In Cowboy Hats

You've probably had a cowboy at at one time in your life. Remember as a small child your mom bought you one. It was probably red, black or brown with a small string under the chin.

Now you've got a lot more to choose from. For comfort, my personal favorites are straw cowboy hats. I bet you've seen one of your neighbors outside working in the garden or mowing the lawn with one on his or her head. Straw is perfect for this because they keep the sun off your face and head but the holes allow the free flow of air. You won't get nearly as hot wearing these. There are generally pretty cheap cowboy hats, but not always. Some forms of straw are very expensive.

Felt and leather cowboy hats can be a bit more formal (and expensive). I personally like black felt. Forget the stereotypes of bad guys wearing black cowboy hats. Black, in my mind anyway, is classy. Although I must agree that white cowboy hats look great on women. And of course these are hotter than straw and also need extra care. More on that later.

If you like brand names, the two most popular are Stetson Cowboy Hats and Resistol Cowboy Hats. Both can get expensive but if you're going to be wearing your hat everyday, the extra money is worth it. I'm not much into labels but if you check out the quality you'll see why they cost a little more.

Caring For Felt Cowboy Hats

As with anything else, felt cowboy hats will last longer if you take care of them. So let's go over a few key points.

If you want to get your hat dirty quickly, go ahead and handle it with dirty or oily hands. This should go without saying.

Store your hat in the original box. If you don't have the original box, store it upside down. This will help it keep it's shape.

Avoid excessive heat. Heat will shrink the band and your hat won't fit anymore.

Avoid getting it wet. If it does get wet, do not dry it with a heat lamp or blow dryer. Turn out the inside sweat band and let it stand and dry naturally on the band. Then when it's finally dry, carefully mold it back into shape.

Doing these simple things should keep your cowboy hat in great shape for many years to come.
