I love to watch the Brewers play at Miller Park, but a highlight for me was when a work trip took me to Washington DC when the Crew was playing the Nationals. We got tickets right behind the dugout and I was able to get Ryan Braun's autograph. (P.S. Some of the most exciting games are against the Cardinals. :))

Baseball is one of the few sports that I really enjoy watching. I think it might be because the players are rarely hurt and the rules are pretty easy. I loved spending my summers sitting in the stands, eating hot dogs, drinking cokes and watching the games. Lots of great memories associated with baseball for me. I think I have told you before that my brother was a pitcher, even through college, so we had many, many years of fun. I don't have a particular team I follow now and even a backyard game works for me :)

I was a Atlanta braves fan when I was a kid. I lived in Los Angeles for a few years. Los Angeles Dodgers was second team I liked. Fernando Valenzuela was the star pitcher. Those were the good old days

Being from NY myself I grew up a Mets fan (my parents Dodgers fans). Oh....my loveable Mets. They always make things interesting for me during the baseball season. Coincidentally, I am now living in LA and becoming some what of a Dodgers fan as well. Dodgers give me a lot less headaches than the Mets although I will never abandon them (haha).

love it! my hubby is from a family of Cardinals diehards, but he's lived in the Chicago area so long that, like you, he became a fan of both Cards & Cubs. obviously there's a lot more gratification with the Cards, but Wrigley Field is such a fun place. my husband has coached our son's b-ball for many years too.

My husband grew up in Southern Illinois and was a Cardinal fan. I grew up in Chicago and am a Cubs fan (poor me!). In almost 30 years of marriage we never had fights.....except on Cubs/Cardinals weekend! Things were not too pleasant around the house but it was over quickly and most would say in jest, but you are talking a serious subject here!
I remember being at a game at Wrigley Field when Hank Aaron hit #703 - that was a huge thrill. In more recent years I went to several games during the McGuire/Sosa home run battle year and was at Nomar Garciaparra's first game as a Cub. The welcome he got in that game gave me chills because the fans in Chicago doing just show up at games, they KNOW baseball and that was the feeling running up and down my spine.
I live in Texas now and pay attention to the Rangers, but I have to admit, they have captured my heart these past several years. Would love to see them win it all; that was very difficult being soooooo close.

This is one of the best lenses ever! If you love baseball and haven't had a chance to get to spring training you should try it. It's cheap to get in, usually about 5 or 10 bucks, the players are more accessible usually, the atmosphere is great, it's really a blast. It doesn't have the electricity of an August night game in a big stadium but it's a tremendous way to get up close and personal and get baseball running back through your vains after winter!
  • MarcGuberti Feb 19, 2012 @ 10:41 pm | delete

My favorite story is being able to take my then 68-year-old mother to her first Braves game in Atlanta. She wasn't well...but wanted to go. It was quite a fete to get her into the stadium and all the stairs. But it was a thrill for her and myself.

You have a few baseball lenses that I'm lensrolling to my couple of baseball ones. Though its spring training, I can't wait until opening day.

As a kid during baseball season I would rather be watching the game on tv than playing outside unless there was a neighborhood game going on. Funny thing was I was the only girl. If I wasn't watching it on tv, or playing it with the kids in neighborhood then I was out back pitching with either my brother or Mom.

Too much fun!! I still love to hang out at the local ball parks to watch.

I'm a little grim this year because my own team is in such a dismal state, and watching the Giants win was the added sting in a painful season. (Although I'm not as bitter as some Dodger fans: I can appreciate good pitching and a team doing its best, it just hurts when my guys were so flat-footed last year).

But baseball is baseball, and we get Vin Scully for at least one more season, even if we don't have a team. And I do admire the Cards. They've had a bit of a choppy time of it -- not helped by the Dodgers two years ago -- but the very best game I've seen in the last few years, besides the Halladay no-hitter, was an '09 Cards-Dodgers game that went about 14 innings before the Cards won. That was SUCH a game. It was August, I think, can't remember the date, but there was just good playing on all sides.

Hope to see some games like that this year. There, now, you've gotten me in the mood for baseball, even though watching our ownership debacle has been like watching a slow-motion train wreck. Thanks. :)

Elf, your baseball lenses are great. Maybe because you pick MY teams! I spent 20 years in Chicago and the Cubbies were my team. But, I grew up in the Lou Brock era of St. Louis and have returned to my roots to love the Cards! Go Red! Just wait til spring!!

I have to admit that I have been excited about watching baseball - for me it would probably be more fun to play it. And of course I LOVED the film Field of Dreams. The other baseball movie I also enjoyed was League of Their Own.

I love the way that your passion for Baseball just oozes out of this lens!
  • resabi Oct 26, 2010 @ 4:15 pm | delete
I enjoyed this lens and your reminiscences and obvious passion for the game. I'm not a follower of sports (although I like baseball movies...) but I do remember being taken to watch the Washington Senators (!) practice when I was a kid. (Actually, my uncle is a retired sportscaster in St. Louis -- mostly college basketball and hockey. I think he still writes a weekly sports column.) My sister is a rabid baseball fan and almost never misses the local minor league games. Blessed.

I love your tribute to your passion. Angel Blessings to you today!

Don't know if I told you but my 2nd cousin is Don Leppert - he was a catcher for the Pitts Pirates when they won the series in the 60's. One final spammy thought: seeing your duel, I wonder if women prefer NL to AL. That would give the lie to the old adage about chicks digging the long ball (which, honestly, I don't -- my favorite play is the double steal).

Wednesday Elf, thank you for the comments on my Jackie Robinson lens! I've lensrolled this on that lens and my Vin Scully lens, and very much enjoyed reading a fellow fan's enthusiasm! This is NOT our year, barring a miracle, and I thought I was going to be somewhat detached this season, but sure enough, when April rolled around, I was back in game mode. I'm taking in the season from home this year -- poor health, Vin Scully's last year broadcasting, and the owners' squabble annoying me so much that I refuse to line the pockets of their divorce lawyers -- but I'm still rooting for my bums even when they're earning the nickname. Good years and bad, it's baseball!

    Hey, neighbor!

I'm an odd fan: I root for my team, but I think of the teams in my league (well, apart from the Giants) as "friendly opponents," so I'm fond of the Padres even though our teams are always scrapping it out against each other. I'm not sure the Pads or the Dodgers are in good shape this year, but I've enjoyed my visits to Petco.

I don't follow baseball much anymore, but I have fond memories of growing up going to Red Sox games with my dad. We'd take the train from Kingston, R.I. to Boston and Fenway Park. This was back when Carl Yazstremski (sp?) was Boston's star. I remember one game where the Sox were down something like 10 to 0, and it was the 9th inning. My dad was ready to leave, to beat the crowd, but I wanted to stay. I insisted. Not till the game was completely over. Well, can you believe it--in the bottom of the 9th, Boston scored THIRTEEN runs! And they won. What was left of the crowd went nuts. Personally, I've never seen or heard of a baseball game like it. My dad swore he'd never leave a game early again.
  • Wednesday_Elf Apr 5, 2010 @ 11:23 am | delete
What a fantastic tale, Deb! One of my very favorite things about baseball is stories & memories like this. I would have LOVED to have seen that game. Wow - 13 runs in the 9th inning -- bet it's some kind of 'record'. BTW, I belong to a 13-run baseball pool and that game would have qualified as a 'win'! I NEVER leave a ballgame before the end (not that I've had that many opportunities to attend ballgames in person) because you never know what's going to happen. Some people (non-fans) call baseball boring - never ever boring to me just because of moments like this one you shared!. A great memory!

What FUN to find another Cardinal fan! Love the Cards vs. Cubs rivalry. Best to you from St. Lou. GO Cardinals. 5*s!

My daughter lives in St. Louis. I was there last May for a visit, but the Cardinals were playing out of town that week! :(

    Go Cards!

Very passionate lens about your love of the game of Baseball. I love to watch my grandson playing ball for the Pendleton Rec and as you know I am passionate about renovating our ballfields so am lensrolling this to Pendleton's Friends of the Park which is a Squidoo Charity. You will have to ask my grandson to tell you about his great grandfather who played for Yankees with Babe Ruth. This lens is blessed.

I'd love to hear about your grandson's great grandfather playing for the Yankees. Very special. Thanks so much for the blessing.

This is a wonderful lens. Baseball is great and you tell your stories so well. Have you ever been to Cooperstown? We took our son there years ago and it was a great experience.

By the way ...I'm not sure how you can be both a Cubs and a Cardinals fan...isn't that a contradiction? :)

(smile) -- being a Cubs fan, as well as a Cards fan IS probably contradictory, but for several years in Georgia I could only watch Cardinal games when they'd play the Braves or were on ESPN, yet I could watch the Cubs daily on WGN on my cable network there. So.... I fell in love with the Cubs players and really enjoy watching them. Now -- when the Cubs & Cards play each other, I root for the St. Louis Cardinals!

I've never been to Cooperstown, but some of my NY family did and sent me a Cooperstown shirt! Another prized baseball possession, along with my Joe Torre autographed baseball.

My deepest passion is Baseball. I have to admit I totally agree with the MLB motto "I Live For This".
