5 Easy Halloween Cupcake Decorating Ideas
If you don't have time to run out to the store to buy specific cookies or candies to decorate your cupcakes, there are some really easy things you can do to turn any cupcake into a festive Halloween cupcake with time and money to spare. I've given this some thought and here are my suggestions!
If you have further suggestions, be sure to leave a comment in the guestbook and I can add it here!

- Spiderwebs. Frost a cupcake with vanilla frosting with a knife (don't pipe a big pretty swirl 'cause we're about to ruin it, haha). Melt some chocolate and put it in a sandwich bag with a small snip off of the corner as a makeshift piping bag. Squeeze the chocolate in a spiral shape on the cupcake. Then before your chocolate hardens, take a toothpick and pull from the middle to the edges 6-8 times around the cupcake. This will pull the chocolate toward the edges and make it look just like a spiderweb!
- Dirt and worms. If you have gummi-worms, awesome. If not, that's okay! You can grind up chocolate sandwich cookies and dunk your freshly frosted cupcake in them for dirt. (If you don't have 'dirt', chocolate frosting is fine too) Then, stick your gummy worms into the cake or pipe some on with colored frosting for an icky treat.
- Eyeball cupcakes. Frost a cupcake with vanilla frosting. Using red food coloring, make a small baggie of reddish frosting with a very small hole for the tip. Pipe 'veins' in the cupcake to give that bloodshot effect (lovely, huh?) For the iris and pupil, you can pipe other colors of frosting on if you like, or you could stick a bite-size Oreo, a Junior Mint, Milk Dud, or any other small cookie or candy for a chewy crunchy treat.
- Graveyard cupcakes. These couldn't be much easier. Frost a cupcake with chocolate frosting. You could go nuts and dye some green coconut flakes to sprinkle on as grass, but that's up to you! Take a sandwich cookie like a Vienna Finger, Milano, even a graham cracker, and pipe "R.I.P." on it with chocolate. Stuff half of the cookie into the cupcake and you have an instant tombstone. Creepy!
- Jack-o-Cupcake. This doesn't involve anything but frosting and it's super-cute and easy. Simply tint some vanilla or other light-colored frosting with orange food coloring and spread on. Take a toothpick to gently make lines curving down the cupcake like a pumpkin. Then, you can either pipe on black or yellow icing to make the shapes you desire for your jack-o-lantern. If you don't have black food coloring, melted chocolate is a great alternative.

Making bright colored frosting and black frosting for Halloween Cupcakes
The colors of the Halloween season are characteristically bright - orange, purple, lime green, and of course, black.
Black is a particularly difficult color to tint frosting without more heavy duty food coloring. No matter how many drops of the grocery store food dye you put in, it won't turn frosting black.
An easy, inexpensive nearly-black solution if you don't have access to more professional food coloring is to use chocolate. For things like spiderwebs or bat cut-outs, chocolate is perfect (and delicious!). If you have orange-flavoring, chocolate and orange make a great mix too for your orange and black combination!
Still, if you'd really like a true black icing for your ghostly concoctions, not to fear! At craft food stores, specialty grocers and online, you can find highly concentrated food coloring in either gel or powder form. A little goes a long way (so much that often the amount you mix in is just the tip of a toothpick!) so it's sure to last you a long time and provide a nice deep rich color.
For colors like bright orange, neon purple and green, these gels and powders are fantastic for eye-popping color (that's safe to eat).

Halloween Cupcake Pics and Sticks
Instead of a toothpick, these little accessories are called cupcake pics, and you can stick them right into the top of your Halloween cupcake to give it a real 3-d presentation. You could also make your own cupcake pic out of half of a milano cookie as a creepy tombstone!
Festive Paper Halloween Cupcake Cups
It wouldn't be a cupcake without the paper to peel away! Why settle for plain old white, foil or pastels when you could have one with jack-o-lanterns, black cats, and bats?
Halloween Cupcake Trees, Cupcake Towers and other cupcake displays
Cupcake stands and cupcake 'trees' are a great way to display your holiday confections for all to see. People are even using these in place of wedding cakes (I may be one of those people soon, when I figure out when my wedding date will be!), and it's a great alternative to using a plate or platter and laying all of your Halloween cupcakes out flat.
Halloween Silicone Cupcake molds and cake molds
I suppose a silicone cupcake pan isn't really a pan at all, since it's so flexible. It's more like a mold or even a cupcake mask! The silicone baking molds are really versatile because you don't just have to bake Halloween cupcakes in them. You could pour jello in there, chocolate or white chocolate, even make spooky ice cubes or frozen treats. Silicone withstands extreme temperatures and peels off easily for a fun and easy way to create dramatic results.
