Mama's Solution was Recycled Crocheted Rag Rugs

In this short article I hope to pass on some inspiration from my mother. She seems to be able to find solutions to most any problem.

For instance... Did you know that

Cold floors plus raggedy clothes = thick warm rug?!

I needed a rug for my entry door. Remembering Mama's example I dug out some tee shirts from the "rag bag", cut them in strips, and crocheted them into my new rug!

One day a friend came by and noticed my creation. She picked it up as the dirt tumbled down to the floor.(It was a rug...) she was quite taken with the abstract way I put the colors together!

Puzzled by her attraction to this item I told her she could take it home, after all I would just make another. Her parting comment was something about FRAMING it!?

The Light Bulb Went On!

If my friend like them would others??

Thus began my tangent.

I wanted to take my children to NY. But we were a one income family, SOooo, I decided to see if my rugs would sell in a Local Craft Store.

At night, after the kids were tucked in and the husband off to his night job, I sat on the bed and crocheted those recycled tee shirts into rugs. It took me only about 4-6 hours per rug, so I could finish one in 2 nights.

When I had about a dozen finished I hauled them down town with kids in tow.

Who woulda thought...

Pic- Giant Hand Prints (each is about 9-10 inches long!)

All but a few smaller one were accepted on consignment!

I was so excited! This particular avenue did manage to sell some for me but their markup was dizzying! So I also did a couple of craft shows and that was terrificly successful.

I added the needed dollars to the Trip Fund.

How Do You Cut Up a Tee Shirt, Anyway??

I learned to make it one continuous string!

I have figured out a way to easily cut the "retired" shirts into ONE CONTINUOUS STRING...

I want to share THAT information with you as well as...

1)Ways to judge the desired width of your strips.

2)Unique ideas for creating what YOU want.

3)Design ideas and tips.

4)Practical advice for beginners AND novices.

5)Thing to watch out for as you create.

    I love your personal story!
I've crocheted many a rug with t-shirts---before realizing that I didn't need to make them near as thick as I did.
I make my rugs now with the toothbrush method over crocheting and am loving it. I made a lens about it in fact.
I need to check to see if there are any handmade consignment stores in my town.
I hope you made what you needed to make that trip.

Great idea! Sometimes clothes get too ratty for the goodwill box, and I never know what to do with them. Now I have lots of decorating options!

Wow. I have mad a pot holder, a placemat to set pans on and am currently working on a rug for my daughters room. I would recommend to anyone. I am a novice crocheter. I just learned how to change colors doing the second pot holder. This is great. My kids are learning to crochet and are loving watching me make these things.

Finally got time to read the whole story. You're amazing! Just for the record, the abstract t-shirt rug you gave us many moons ago is still going strong.
