Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks Rugby League Football Club

Cronulla-Sutherland District Rugby League Football Club (The Sharks) became part of the premier competition in 1967. The club is based in Cronulla in the Sutherland shire which is south of Sydney. They play in the National Rugby League competition (NRL).
Cronulla joined the competition at the same time as Penrith Panthers. It had been 20 years since any new club had joined. Manly and Parramatta had joined previously in 1947. Devoted To Sport

The Cronulla Sharks

The sharks have played in three grand finals in 1973, 1978 and 1997 but have yet ot win one. They have two minor premierships under their belt 1988 and 1999.

In the Sharks first game they won against Eastern Suburbs, but then they only won 2 more games that season against Parramatta and North Sydney. They finished their first season with the wooden spoon.

In 1973 they lost the grand final to Manly 10-7
In 1978 they played Manly again in the grand final. The score was a draw 11 all.
In the replay that followed, Manly won 16-0.
In 1979 Cronulla won the mid-week competition, the Amco Cup, defeating a combined Brisbane side 22-5. This is the first top grade trophy for the club.

The 1980's brought financial troubles. An administrator was appointed and the club was given a loan. Western Suburbs and Newtown were also struggling financially, Wests survived but Newtown didn't and they were forced out of the competition.

In 1983 teenage star Andrew Ettinghausen made his debut. He was named Rookie of the year and went on to become Cronulla's most capped player.

Financial problems again for the club in the 1990's and they were placed into receivership. On the field though, the teams were firing, all grades were playing extremely well and the club was drawing record crowds. These on-field performances played a big part in getting the club out of trouble.

In 1997 Cronulla joined super league. They made it to the grand final but lost to Brisbane 26-8 in Brisbane.

This is the only grand final ever to be played outside of Sydney.

In 1998 Cronulla rejoined the newly formed NRL.
1999 was a good season for Cronulla with them taking out the minor premiership.

Present times are tough for Cronulla with bad publicity for off-field incidents and poor form on-field. Loss of sponsorship and poor attendances are making this season a struggle. They have gotten out of this situation previously and I'm sure they will survive this upheaval and keep on going! The team needs to start winning a few games and putting in some good performances to bring back the crowds. I don't want to see another team kicked out of the NRL. No-one should be kicked out. My family of Parramatta supporters are still upset over the demise of North Sydney and Newtown.

2009 - Sharks finish 15th on the ladder.
