A great starter craft for kids to enjoy!
I love cross-stitching its fun, it's easy and it's a great way to make gifts that your family and friends will love. This is also a good way to get your kids involved in crafts and encourage their artistic interest. They make some kits that are specifically designed to be easy enough for children to use. My son made a glow in the dark frog over the summer and he loves it. He also made a gift for his grandmother and he was so proud of himself when he gave it to her.

The best gifts are still the ones you make!
I know that during the summer I'm always looking for things that my son and I can do together, but just like most people I don't have a bunch of extra money lying around this was a good choice for us. The kits are inexpensive and easy to use or you can buy the floss, patterns and material. Most of the kits come with easy to follow instructions for the stitching and finishing. They make kits that are specifically designed for kids. The patterns are large and easy to follow and most of the time they print the design on the fabric. The Lighthouse pictured is one I did with my sons help. We started out on small projects but we get bigger ones each time. He really enjoys the time we spend working on these projects, and it gives him something creative to do instead of spending his whole summer watching T.V. or playing video games. Cross-stitch outside the lines!
If you start doing cross-stitch projects with you kids don't just stick to the kits. When your child first begins the kits are a great way to learn the basics, but make sure let them use their imaginations as well. Older children may have more fun if you let them create their own patterns. Don't get me wrong this will take more time and effort on both your parts. You will need to draw out the patterns decide which colors to use and where to use them which fabric to use and which floss, but this way you and your child can make cross-stitches about the things that they enjoy whether you can find it in a kit or not, and they will get the satisfaction of creating their very own project from start to finish.

This is the first cross stitch we did
I had a trouble mounting this one so it ended up crooked in the frame. I laugh at it now when I look at it, but it was a good learning experience for me as well.
