Digital Photography by Tammy Winand

Sweeping landscapes, architectural images, still lifes offering commentary on our world... this is what you will find in the galleries of CrypticFragments Photography.

This page is an introduction to my work and my perspective on photography.

I pursue this passion for photography as a portion of my life's work. I believe my images capture scenes which need to be shared, which have something to say about the condition of our world...what we have, what we have lost.

My Passion for Photography

how I got started

I'm not exactly sure how it started. Perhaps all the slide shows my parents made of my sisters and I as children. Perhaps looking through my grandma's collection of family photo albums. All, I know is, by the time I was in high school, I was already obsessed with taking pictures of my environment.

My first cameras were tiny and flimsy, used 110 film, and were often lost or broken. I begged my mother for rolls of film at the grocery store. More than half of the images I shot in those days never even got developed!

I remember the joy of my first instant camera. The fun of waving the developing image around in the air thinking it would get done faster that way.

When I acquired my first digital camera, I was in heaven! No more waiting! No more film developing costs! And what had already been a hobby turned into a virtual obsession. In fact, a travel companion once told me I was so busy framing and taking pictures that I wasn't really enjoying the trip! (I disagree, but that's another story...)

Images of India

I made my first journey to India in late 2009 and spent nearly 5 months exploring Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh states. The architecture is varied and visually stunning.

My second visit lasted for a total of 11 months during 2010-2011 and was based in Himachal Pradesh, in the north of the country, in the Himalayan fotthills, with a side trip to Nepal.

I cannot wait to return to continue my explorations of northern and eastern India in late 2012!

Western & Southwestern Photography

I lived and traveled in the American Southwest...from New Mexico to the Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons and Colorado Rocky Mountains...from 2006 off and on through 2010.

Photo options in this area are spectacular and seemingly boundless!

Inspirational Subjects

I have a preference for imagery which conveys some aspect of the history or culture of place. This may mean an architectural detail of a ruin or a blurred image of a passing subway train. It may mean a selection of tea pots for sale at a street stall in an English market, or a gate to a ranch in the middle of the New Mexico wilderness.

A good photograph evokes emotions in the viewer.
When I am awed by a place or scene, I want to try to capture that sensation to share with my viewers.

I confess to having a passion for photo-editing, as well. I like exploring the variety of ways in which a single image can be manipulated into a wide range of art forms.

Scenes Which Move Me

I have eclectic tastes when it comes to choice of subject but most of my work falls into the following categories:
landscapes, architectural shots, abstracts, and still lifes.
I shoot a lot of churches/cathedrals and ruins from different cultures and am really excited about my upcoming 5 month journey through northern India.

When viewing the work of other photographers, I gravitate to images of wild rugged sweeping landscapes, exotic travel locations including ancient and unique architecture, anything which captures the history of a place, unusual views of abandoned and ruined buildings, or that capture the colors and FEEL of a destination.

Notre Dame... I was awed by the Gothic details.
