Founded by Carl Sontheimer in 1971, Cuisinart is a brand of small kitchen appliances, perhaps best known for their food processor. The brand quickly took off, and became one of the top selling appliance brands in the United States. Even though the company had a great deal of success, in 1989 it filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by the Conair Corporation.

Quite possibly one reason for the brand experiencing great success was due to endorsements from Julia Child and James Beard. These culinary experts promoted the use of a food processor as a means to prepare healthy food, quickly and easily.

Even though the company experienced a bit of trouble, and is now under management from the Conair Corporation, the same fine products are still made today. Cuisinart continues to be a much respected name that is endorsed by culinary experts; today by Jacques Pepin and Hubert Keller.

While it is best known for its line of food processors, there is no other appliance company in the world that produces the number of small kitchen appliances as Cuisinart. The company is truly a "full service culinary resource" that is highly regarded amongst both home users and professional chefs. Today, in addition to the food processor, the company produces coffeemakers, espresso machines, tea kettles, cookware and bake ware, blenders, frozen yogurt/ice cream/sorbet makers, hand mixers, microwaves, pizza and brick ovens, stand mixers, waffle irons, bread makers, pressure cookers, deep fryers, water filtration systems, popcorn makers, and even wine cellars.

Cuisinart also holds its own with higher end appliance companies in the areas of innovation and design as well. Recent awards include: the 2009 Shape You 'Top Gear of the Year' Award for the "Vertical Rotisserie", the 2009 Chicago Athenaeum Green Good Design Award for its "GreenGourmet Cookware" line, and the 2009 Shape You 'Great Gear of the Year' Award for the "Rice-Plus Multi-Cooker".
