What Causes Insomnia?

Causes of insomnia include: acute stress such as having to be hospitalized or having a sick relative, being overweight, depression, anxiety, or other mental health problems. There are also medical problems such as sleep apnea, hyperthyroidism, restless leg syndrome (muscles in your lower legs twitch or tense up during sleep) that can cause your insomnia.

Other causes of insomnia may include: previous arguments with family members, watching exciting programs on television late at night, consuming caffeine (found in tea, coffee or cola drinks), large amounts of alcohol, or a large meal close to bedtime. In most cases, however, the core problem is emotional.

So, How Do You Treat Insomnia?

Treatment for chronic (long-term) insomnia includes first treating any underlying conditions or health problems that are causing the insomnia. Methods used for treatment include behavioral modification, following good sleep hygiene practices, light therapy, and occasionally medication is prescribed for a short period of time. If these methods do not work for you there is another, natural way you can treat your insomnia, and it is called "brainwave entrainment".

Interesting treatment idea. I personally use Earplugs to avoid staying awake because of noise.

One thing I like to do before bed is to write down everything down that I have on my mind at that moment. This really helps me relax and remember what tasks I have to do the next day.

I sometimes try to bore myself to sleep by thinking about just mundane things, not anything that will raise the blood pressure, just "I wonder if it will snow tomorrow. If that happens it will be pretty out." Etc. All said in monotones. :)
