What Causes Insomnia? 

Causes of insomnia include: acute stress such as having to be hospitalized or having a sick relative, being overweight, depression, anxiety, or other mental health problems. There are also medical problems such as sleep apnea, hyperthyroidism, restless leg syndrome (muscles in your lower legs twitch or tense up during sleep) that can cause your insomnia.

Other causes of insomnia may include: previous arguments with family members, watching exciting programs on television late at night, consuming caffeine (found in tea, coffee or cola drinks), large amounts of alcohol, or a large meal close to bedtime. In most cases, however, the core problem is emotional.

So, How Do You Treat Insomnia? 

Treatment for chronic (long-term) insomnia includes first treating any underlying conditions or health problems that are causing the insomnia. Methods used for treatment include behavioral modification, following good sleep hygiene practices, light therapy, and occasionally medication is prescribed for a short period of time.
