Described as a Permanent Hangover........
Hooray, let's celebrate you are pregnant, but then before the celebrations are over the sickness kicks in. It can be a real shock to the system - What's happening aren't you supposed to glow during pregnancy ?
It has been described as having a hangover, day after day, but of course without the great night before. Seems unfair doesn't it?
The best way to describe the feeling of morning sickness is waves of nausea. They come and go, some waves will be worse than others. For the women that experience morning sickness, everyday tasks can be impossible - school lunches, preparing food when the smell makes your stomach turn.
In this lens we offer remedies for morning sickness and also include some free tips to provide relief from the nausea nightmare.
My Own Morning Sickness.........
so far, hopefully will be lucky 3rd time around.........
With my first child, I only experienced occasional waves and although it was definitely not nice, particularly as the waves always came at unwanted time, I managed to struggle through. Although, I do remember that one of my worst spells was during a job interview, enhanced by the fact that the guy interviewing me had been eating garlic! Not good.
With my second child, when I was just over 4 weeks pregnant it started. The slightest smell would set me off - I couldnt believe the smell of toast was so strong! I could not keep anything down at all, even water some days. My Mum advised me to start sipping luke warm water instead having cold water, this allowed me to at least drink a bit of fluid. I would manage to keep the odd cracker down if nibbled slowly. But, then it got to the stage that I was becoming concerned about the health of my unborn baby (now a fully grown whirlwind called Sam). I started to worry about the nutrition, I was supposed to be eating healthily but somedays struggled to keep crackers down!

Some tips for you.........
There are a few things that you can start to do straight away to help Relieve Morning Sickness. Some are listed below:
Always make sure that you carry snacks with you wherever you go. So that if you start to feel sick then you can nibble on some food and it may relieve morning sickness. Often the morning sickness is worse on an empty stomach.
Keep dry biscuits or crackers next to your bed so that if you wake up in the night you can nibble on them. Before getting up in the morning if possible eat on a couple and then wait 20 - 30 minutes before getting up.
Try to not drink too much during meal times, save the drinking for inbetween meals.
Eat little and often. An empty stomach wont help but also neither will a full one.
Listen to your body, eat what you fancy. Staying away from fried, spicy, rich or greasy foods.
Have ginger, it comes in many forms, such as biscuits, tea or ginger ale. Even knawing on fresh ginger can help.
Smell lemons, cutting them in half and occasionally smelling them may be enough.
Relax, when you get the opportunity.
If you can face it have some protein before you go to bed. Like cheese, sardines or egg. Protein takes a long time to digest meaning that blood sugar levels dont drop so much in the night.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum
as bad as it gets.......

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is the name that is given for excessive morning sickness. Its if you cant keep food or drink down without vomiting. The vomiting will be present frequently during the day. You will be losing weight.
Its easy to become dehydated. Dehydration is the most common cause of hospitalisation of a pregnant woman suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
It can cause you to become withdrawn and depressed. Normal everyday tasks such as sorting the kids can become too much to bear. Doing school lunches or handling food can be a real problem. Ask for help from you family. If possible ask your husband or partner to take the odd hour off here and there to help out. If a relative offers to help in any way - dont be proud - accept!
Thankfully it is rare. With only between 0.5 and 2% of pregnant women suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum

- Another enjoyable lens, despite the subject matter. My first pregnancy was the worst and I lost a lot of weight. With the second - 4 years later - I had three mornings when I experienced morning sickness. I took a Gravol each morning and that was the end of it. As for the third pregnancy, Diclectin saved the day. I'm not sure how sick I may have been without it but I wasn't taking any chances. I still remember that feeling as though an alien had invaded my body and turned it upsidedown. I do remembered having preggie pops during my last pregnancy; I enjoyed them, as did my girls. :)

- Thankfully my morning sickness was not too debilitating, but it was nauseating! My favorite remedy - well, it was a preventive, not a remedy - was to put a few drops of peppermint essential oil (ginger would work too) on a cloth and put it on my pillow by my head at night. After breathing it all night, my stomach would stay calm the next day. Being in the car was the worst; the smells always got to me. So I kept a cloth with a few drops of oil in a sealed plastic baggie, which I would open and inhale as I drove.

- Don't remind me! I had morning sickness with every pregnancy (six) before I missed my first period. The sickness continued until the birth. I didn't realise there was a name for it and no fuss was ever made about it although I did get a few tickings-off from doctors about losing weight. Yes, it made cooking difficult as I kept bolting to the bathroom. Yes it was hard to cuddle other children, their smell nauseated me too.
