A Guide to Quick and Easy Auto Customization for Non-Mechanical Girls

I love a custom car. My dream is to create the ultimate custom car. I have several problems to work around though. First of which was not owning a car. I cured that by buying a $900 black 1998 Volvo 240GL. Now I have my car, one problem solved. Next problem, I am a 32-year-old gal who knows nothing about the mechanics of cars. I just know I like cars, and I like my cars to look good. This will be my first car project. My goal is to do a complete, non-mechanical overhaul of the interior and exterior of my car.

Special Note:

This lens is still under construction, watch for more info to come soon!

Here is what I plan to do:

On this lens you'll find out what I am doing to my Volvo and how you can do it too.

The Paint Job:

First off, I will be stripping the paint. This little black Volvo will be reborn with a new coat of dark royal purple-black metal flake. The first layer in triple black, the second layer in royal purple flake, and the third layer in clear. The end result will be a very dark purple, which from a distance, appears black, but up close will be a highly metallic shimmering black with a purple glitter sheen. I want it to look like a purple peacock. The paint job will be the biggest, most expensive, and most time consuming part of this car's customization. Once the paint job is done, the rest will be easy.

Seat Covers:

My next step will be the seat covers. I have already bought the fabric for this: seven yards of brilliant blood red eyelash shag. It has a lightweight delicate feathering, with a 2" long fringe. I will be sewing this into seat covers for both front and back seats. It is a simple matter of measuring the seats, cutting the fabric to fit, and sewing up the sides. Easy. I will have them finished in less than two hours. Removable and washable and if I get tired of them, I can always make more out of a different color or fabric later.

Adding Cool Bling:

My next step is to find an assortment of various accessories for my car. It has already had a $200 stereo system installed. I saw a steering wheel cover made of black velvet with tiny pink and red hearts embroidered into the fabric. I will be going back to get that. There was also a set of floor mats with matching heart designs. I will have to get those too. I also saw a set of metallic red windshield wipers; you know I am adding those! I already bought a pink plastic flamingo for the dashboard and a pair of red fuzzy dice for the mirror. Tacky? Of course! What custom car would be seen with out them? I have a blue fuzzy monkey stuffed animal, which will be sitting in the back window.

Sound Effects:

I am a farm girl. Born and raised on a poultry farm. I have 200 pet roosters. I love roosters. Of course, I love custom cars as well. I want my car to somehow reflect my love for roosters. I really want this car to crow, literally. I was at the local auto parts store this week and I spotted just the thing: an electronic horn. Plays some 45 different sounds and a hundred or so songs. But you want to know what I liked about it? It crows. Sounds like a real live rooster crowing at dawn. Well that is just the thing for me. So now my car well shimmer like a peacock and crow like a rooster. I'm happy.

Overview:

I suppose a more mechanically minded person would say that what I am doing is really accessorizing my car. Well, so maybe I am, but you know what? When I am done, I will be able to say that I have the best-dressed Volvo around. And who knows, when I am done, I may just decide to take out the engine and replace it with a Hemi. You know, I think I will do that anyways. Can you imagine a car that shines like a peacock, crows like a rooster, and drives like the General Lee? Quite a transformation for a car that started out as a $900 Volvo. I cannot wait to get this car on the road.
