"Careful observation is the only key to true and complete awareness."
The DHARMA Initiative (Department of Heuristics And Research on Material Applications Initiative)is a multidisciplinary research collective dedicated to improving the human condition through innovative scientific research. Created in 1970 by Gerald and Karen DeGroot, and officially canceled in 1987 due to unknown causes, although recent activity indicates that DHARMA Initiative research is again being conducted. It is not known whether this is a new development, or if DHARMA research has unofficially continued in secret all along.
The DHARMA Initiative was funded by Alvar Hanso and the Hanso Foundation, a Danish scientific reasearch company. According to an interview with Hugh McIntyre, Communications Director of the Hanso Foundation; "The DHARMA Initiative was canceled in 1987, we cut off its funding, we ended that project." When asked about the nature of the project, he responded with "Well, frankly, because of proprietary interests with the technology, I can't talk about that specifically."
Information on both the DHARMA Initiative and the Hanso Foundation is scarce and hard to come by, due to the intense secrecy practiced by both parties. What follows is the result of approximately 4 years of research by myself, and others.

I filled out a contract and I sat in a chair next to what looked like a portapotty. I was called inside. They hooked up a microphone to my shirt, took my application and asked me to choose a test. I chose Europa. Another option had been highlighted. He nodded and asked why I chose that particular test. I said because it sounded like Europe which was somewhere I had never been. He handed back my application with my application number facing the camera. The other guy handed me a pair of headphones and said that if I at any time feel uncomfortable, to take them off. They said to relax and just answer with the first thing that popped into my head to the series of questions. They started up the Europa test. The computer asked me if I was ready to begin. I said yes. It said to speak louder a few times. I answered the questions. At one point, there were voices in the headphones. I couldn't understand. I passed the test and got a Dharma ID card. It is nontransferable. Posted July 28, 2008 |

The Rachel Blake Videos
Under the guise of the hacker "Persephone", Rachel sabotaged the Hanso Foundation website through flash hacks, exposing truths about their dealings. She then moved on to publish blogs and videos on her investigations, culminating in her publishing a video which would "tear the Foundation apart".

DHARMA Initiative Research Stations
Confirmed Stations on "The Island"
Read more about the DHARMA Initiative Research Stations and "The Island" at http://www.squidoo.com/DHARMAINITIATIVEstationsThe DHARMA Initiative conducted its research and activities on a tropical island (at an undisclosed location) through a series of stations. They all have (or have had) power (from the Tempest) and a water supply, as well as various kinds of equipment (e.g. machinery, living quarters, computers, medical equipment, etc). Each facility has its own, octagon-shaped logo.
It is known from the orientation films that there were at least six stations in 1980. However, a total of eight different stations have already been located, suggesting that either additional stations (and possibly additional films) were made after 1980, and/or that an unknown number of stations without associated films exist in addition to those with films.
Confirmed Stations include:
The Arrow
The Swan
The Flame
The Pearl
The Orchid
The Staff
The Hydra
The Looking Glass
The Tempest
