Confirmed Stations on "The Island"

The DHARMA Initiative conducted its research and activities on a tropical island (at an undisclosed location) through a series of stations. They all have (or have had) power (from the Tempest) and a water supply, as well as various kinds of equipment (e.g. machinery, living quarters, computers, medical equipment, etc). Each facility has its own, octagon-shaped logo.

It is known from the orientation films that there were at least six stations in 1980. However, a total of eight different stations have already been located, suggesting that either additional stations (and possibly additional films) were made after 1980, and/or that an unknown number of stations without associated films exist in addition to those with films.

Station 1: The Arrow

Little is known of the original purpose of the Arrow Station. While it is possible that the station had a different original purpose, its last role was as a storage facility.

Station 3: The Swan

The Swan was DHARMA Initiative station number 3. According to the Orientation Film, the Swan was originally a laboratory "where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the Island". However, after an "Incident", a protocol had to be followed in which two people would take shifts pressing a button (inputting the Numbers into a computer) every 108 minutes for 540 days, at the end of which replacements would arrive to take the place of the previous inhabitants. Having been imploded following a system failure and fail-safe activation, a large crater now resides in its place, located in the south-western region of the Island, about a mile inland of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.

The Swan Orientation Film

The Swan Orientation film is a film produced by the Hanso Foundation to instruct the inhabitants of the Swan, a DHARMA Initiative station. The film's official title is "3 of 6 - Orientation". It is narrated by Dr. Marvin Candle and bears a copyright date of 1980.

Station 4: The Flame

The Flame was a DHARMA initiative communications station. The station itself existed in three parts. The flame consisted of a living area, some storage, and a computer room. Underneath a rug was a door to a lower hatch area, which contained the DHARMA manuals of operations and maintenance manuals for the station, plus more storage. Outside the building was a paddock for cows.

Station 5: The Pearl

The task of this station, according to its orientation video, is to monitor the Swan station and possibly other stations via a remote viewing system. The purpose of the Pearl seems to be to study psychology. However, it is presumed the work the Pearl staff was conducting was in fact useless, as the notebooks they were asked to fill ended up at a dump. There was also a hidden camera present in the Pearl, indicating they, and not the Swan residents, were the subject of the experiment.

Station 6: The Orchid

The Orchid, or "Station 6", is a fake botanical station that houses many numbered white rabbits. It seems to have an alarm system with elements similar to that of Station 3: The Swan. In the Orientation film, the subject of the Orchid's research is described as "highly volatile and potentially dangerous", and reference is made to the Casimir effect.

From the outside, the Orchid station resembles a greenhouse, containing a variety of flora. The station's exterior also appears to have become overgrown with vines covering, for instance, stairs and support beams.

There is a hidden switch within the station that activates an elevator taking one to the "real" station underground. To get there, follow these directions: "Once inside, you're going to
turn left. Go about 20 paces until you see a patch of anthuriums on your left. They're in an
alcove against the north wall. Face that wall, reach down with your left hand, you'll find a
switch that activates the elevator. The elevator takes you down to the actual Orchid station."

Station: The Staff

The staff is a medical station

Station: The Hydra

The Hydra is located on a much smaller second island next to the main Island. A sprawling collection of buildings and subterranean facilities, it is the largest station found to date.

Station: The Looking Glass

The Looking Glass is an underwater station at the south end of the Island. It is offshore of the beach where the cable enters the ocean. Its apparent purpose was to guide vessels (eg. submarines) towards the Island, although it also appears as though it was used to jam any signals being broadcast to or from the Island.

Station: The Tempest

The Tempest stores a deadly toxic gas, as well as its precursors. Its location is about a day's walk north of the the western coast.

The Tempest consists of two levels. The first is a catwalk into the main level and a catwalk over it. The bottom level is the main level, and filled with computer systems. One such computer is responsible for releasing toxic gas into the atmosphere of the Island.

The toxic gas housed in the Tempest appears to have been neutralized.

Station: The Door

The Door is a set of two metal doors, with a DHARMA Initiative logo on them. The Door is located below a remarkable rock formation next to the coast and was thought to be the entrance to another DHARMA Initiative station. Yet, when the door was opened, we discovered that there was only solid rock wall behind it. Its original purpose, if it even had one, is unknown.
