An Improvement on Reality

Have you noticed how many of the manufacturers of video camera's these days promote the fact that video camera's "don't need much light". Compared to camera's of yesteryear this may be somewhat true but good video still needs to be lit correctly.

As I'm sure you are aware, all of the shows you watch on TV are all carefully lit and they have much more expensive and technologically advanced camera's than the home video enthusiast.

Did you know that the average video camera can only produce about one tenth the contrast of your eyes and the only way to compensate for this is, either to add ambient light or reduce the light on overexposed areas.

Video Lighting isn't really true to life, the lighting that you see on TV and on video isn't usually real, in the sense that it isn't as you would see the scene with your own eyes, in most cases though, it is actually an improvement on reality for the benefit of the camera.

Using the correct lighting is what makes the difference between a professional looking video and one that's just average.
