She's a wife and mother to 3 children so how she finds the time for this beats me but I'm very glad she does :-)

I hope you enjoy seeing and reading about Debra's work.

The vast majority of the text in these modules is from Debra's own descriptions of the items.

The 2 drawers contain a selection of brass tins and a spoon - these are all fixed in place. There are 3 faux keyholes, with protruding "keys" and beautifully detailed handles to the drawers.

12th medical/doctor,bleeding set, v.v. detailed.

12th scale miniature

Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

Bleeding a patient was, for hundreds of years, thought to cure all manner of ills. From teething children to headaches, the removal of blood (phlebotomy) was regarded as in invaluable tool in re-balancing the bodies' humours. This set consists of a lancet, which has a fully pivoting blade, a glass cup (which would be warmed, then placed onto the cut; the resulting vacuum created by the cooling glass would swiftly draw out the desired amount of blood........but if the "doctor" thought this amount insufficient more could be drawn using the pump! It could then be assessed and measured in the bowl.

12th scale apothecary,chemist,alchemy scales

12th scale miniature

Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

Handsome, unique and totally handcrafted this incredibly detailed piece is an essential addition to any 12th scale medical/apothecary scene. Standing 1 3/4 " (4cm) tall and 1 1/2" (2.75cm) wide the scales have a pivoting arm with ceramic effect trays at each end.

Inside the drawer sitting snugly in their indentations are four "brass" weights, a pencil and fastening leather book with blank pages.

Monaural stethoscope,doctor,medical,miniature

12th scale miniature

Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

The stethoscope, in it's mono form, was invented due to the reticence of a young doctor to listen to the chest of a female patient by placing his ear directly onto her chest. With childhood memories of sound enhancement, he completed the examination with a rolled stack of paper....noticing how vivid the previously muffled sounds had become with the cone he published his findings. Their use became widespread very soon after, from around 1820.

This piece,12th scale is a perfect addition to any late Georgian or Victorian medical scene. In an aged wooden, hinged and fastening box it fits snugly into it's indentations. Length of box-1 1/4" (33mm), width 3/8" (10mm) approximately.

Plague doctor's mask and stand.

1144th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

These would have been a common sight in Europe in the 1600's.Worn by "doctors" who attended the houses of plague victims.

The beak like end would have been stuffed with herbs and spices-unbelievably the mask would have afforded the wearer some protection against disease and the herbs against the terrible stench of bursting buboes!.

12th scale Plague doctor's mask + effects.

12th scale miniature

Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

Height of stand, including mask- 5 1/2",width-3 1/4".

This auction is for a truly fabulous piece,
totally handcrafted and unique.

These macabre masks were used certainly from the early 1600's but Debra can't find a start and stop point for their use.

The beak of the mask would have been hollow (this one is solid) and stuffed with various herbs to "clean" the bad air, which it was believed carried the disease.

Thick gauntlets and an amulet belt were also used; the belt amulets would have contained such weird and wonderful items as ground frog bones-these to were also believed to protect the wearer.

On the stand for the items are also 3 containers, which would have been storage vessels for the herbs and amulet contents.

To be factually correct a thick, oiled coat would also have been worn, but as I've said before I'm totally useless with a sewing needle! The term doctor is tad exaggerating, medicine at the time offered no hope at all to plague victims, the role of the doctor was more to confirm death and organise disposal of the bodies.

12th scale Doctor, Apothecary, Chemist - pill roller.

12th scale miniature

Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.

Pill rollers were an essential piece of equipment to any period chemist, apothecary or even doctor scene. They were used to make pills.

The relevant ingredients would be gathered, mixed and rolled into a sausage shape. This would then be placed to the left of the brass bar on the tray (the tray is the "white" part. The roller part would then be placed to the left of this and be drawn to the right, pushing the mixture into grooves on the tray with the corresponding grooves on the roller.

At the end, the drawer would be opened slightly, for the resulting pills to fall into. The drawer could then be removed for the pills to be taken onto the next stage of the preparation process.

In this entirely handcrafted and unique item the roller moves very neatly along the tray, the drawer is lined in black "velvet" and has a very highly detailed ring handle. Length-1 1/2" and width 1 1/8".

Handsome apothecary or doctor's armoire

This incredibly handsome little piece started out as a regular piece of furniture, bought by Debra with the intention to turn into something more.

Standing 3 1/4" high, it has been painted black and now has a high shine finish with gold accents. The top lifts to reveal 6 glass containers with brass lids, all contain "liquids" or solids to mimic the detailed labels - these can be removed from the black, velvet like lining.

The 2 lined drawers contain a selection of brass tins and a measuring spoon.(these items are fixed in place).

The drawers also have Chippendale style handles and faux key plates with the key tails protruding, as does the main body of the piece, which also has a fob attached to it's tail.

It would make a particularly fine addition to a pharmacy / apothecary / doctor scene - especially Victorian.
