Blu-Ray Q and A

Before purchasing your first blu-ray disc player, you might have some questions. Here are some common Qs and As.

Q: Will I need to buy a new television?

A: You don't need to buy a new TV for your blu-ray player to work, but you'll want a newer TV if you want to take advantage of the better picture and sound quality that you'll get with your new disc player.

You'll want a high definition television. If you've bought a TV in the past few years, there is a good chance that you already have an HD TV. Check the resolution of your television. If it is 480, 720, or 1080, you already own a high definition television. If you are looking to buy a new TV, 1080p or 1080i are the most high tech.

Q: What exactly is Blu-ray?

A: Blu-ray is an optical disc format. It is the successor to the DVD, in much the same way that the DVD succeeded VHS. It provides better quality and stores more data than a DVD. Blu-ray has 8 channels of lossless audio and a resolution that is six times greater than a DVD.

A single layer Blu-ray disc can hold 25 GB of data, with a double layer one holding twice that. The single layer disc stores 5.5 times more data than a DVD.

Q: Do I have to replace my DVD collection?

A: Just because you're buying a blu-ray player doesn't mean that you have to toss your old DVDs. Your blue-ray player will still play your DVDs. In fact, most blu-ray players have upconverting technology which will make your DVDs look and sound better. Although they still won't be high definition, they will be better than standard.

Buying the DMP-BD55K for Christmas

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player

The Panansonic DMP-BD55K is a good Blu-ray player to buy as a Christmas present. Since it is a large purchase, many people wait until a holiday to buy it. While Christmas may be the most popular holiday, it is also a hot gift for birthdays, Valentine Day, anniversaries, and Father's Day or Mother's Day.

Ideally, the DMP BD 55 K is a gift for the whole family. It's a mid-ranged blue ray disc player that has many features. Because of this it is usually hooked up to the largest and nicest tv. This is not the ideal present for a teen. This is a good gift for your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, or parents.

Review of the Panasonic DMP-BD55K

The Panasonic DMP-BD55K is a newer blu-ray disc player, along with the Panasonic DMP-BD35K.

Both of them offer HD Audio Decoderwith Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTSTM-HD Master Audio Essential. This allows it to deliver 7.1 channel surround sound. You should get the BD-55K if you want more features, such as high-end audio components that allow you to output analog for 7.1 channel sound. You don't even need a receiver that is compatible with HDMI.

An SD memory card slot is included in the Panasonic DMP-BD55K. This is a great feature to have if you use a camera or an HD camcorder that uses SD cards because it makes it easy to transfer the images.

This player has the BD-Live feature. You'll be able to access the internet straight from your blu-ray disc player and download special scenes or subtitles for the movies that you watch.

If you are looking for a disc player for your teen, the Panasonic DMP-BD55K may be too high end. This player is good enough for the whole family to enjoy.
