HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Do you think that it's wise for people to spend millions of dollars on the forensic analysis of mummies?

Well, as I watched the Discovery Channel, I remember the TV host mentioning that a laboratory for the forensic analysis of mummies exists. I sat on the sofa, wondering about if people could still extract DNA from mummies that have laid hidden in pyramids for centuries. Then I heard that the laboratory costs millions of dollars, and I learned that the scientists in Secrets of Egypt's Lost Queen wanted to use the laboratory to identify the mummy of Hatshepsut, an unpopular queen of Egypt. Ancient Egyptians had chipped away at her records and smashed away at her statues as she supposedly had a relationship with a builder. Interested in learning more about her, scientists specially shipped her along with some other unknown mummies. They took out some mummies from the pyramids and some from the coffins in the Egyptian Museum. Finding Hatshepsut among the mummies cost so much money and time.

At first, I found the spending ridiculous since people could spend the money on more important issues such as crime-fighting and war. Then, after viewing several Court TV shows and carefully pondering on the spending, I think that I too support scientists in conducting a forensic analysis of mummies. I believe that people often discover solutions when they encounter unique challenges. As people attempt to do so, they may find new ways of performing tasks more efficiently. In fact, from watching crime shows, I learned that many of the current developments in forensics comes from not the intention to solve murder cases. Inevitably, I believe, people will benefit more from diverse research as every issue requires attention.

Interesting facts about a common DNA analysis technique!

The polymerase chain reaction!

In the laboratory, people often use PCR to analyze small samples of DNA! You can this laboratory technique to conduct forensic analyses and to identify genetic diseases!
  • This technique involves heating and cooling cycles for chemical mixtures to work properly.
  • Scientists often employ taq polymerase, an enzyme from Thermus Aquaticus, to help amplify DNA. The microbe Thermus Aquaticus lives in the ocean and thrives near hot water vents.
  • Scientists can analyze DNA from multiplying a small sample of it. A small drop of blood may help reveal the identity of killer.
  • Taq polymerase enables scientists to supposedly enlarge a sample of DNA. This enzyme aids the synthesis of bases complementary to the original strands of DNA.
