Sciatica - A Commonly Known Herniated Or Bulging Disc Symptom and the DRX9000

by Rick Durand

Sciatica is a painful symptom that may be caused by compressive forces resulting in irritation of the sciatic nerve or any of its nerve roots. It is most commonly associated with stinging, burning or numbing pain that may be experienced in the lower back, buttock, thigh, leg, or foot. Diagnosis of this particular symptom may be achieved through a physical examination or medical history review. If the condition that is causing this nerve-associated symptom is left untreated, it may have a huge impact on everyday activities such as walking, sitting, lifting and other simple movements.

This painful symptom may be caused by several conditions such as piriformis syndrome, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs and bulging discs. Although there may be several conditions that lead to similar symptoms, only herniated discs, bulging discs and degenerative disc disease are associated with the intervertebral disc.

Sciatica caused by an intervertebral disc related condition may have a wide range of painful effects. Sciatica caused by compression or irritation may produce stinging or burning lower back pain, which will quickly work its way along the buttocks and leg. In several cases, the shooting pain may lead down to the foot causing numbness. When a person is experiencing sciatica symptoms, it may be difficult for them to live a normal or active lifestyle. Unless the condition is treated, a person may not likely be able to partake in normal daily functions which may also lead to depression and other negative effects.

A physician may recommend a certain treatment option based on age, general health, medical history and degree of the sciatica causing condition. Common treatment options associated with sciatica causing conditions may include bed rest, pain medications, physical therapy, acupuncture, surgery and traction.

A relatively new treatment option to consider for intervertebral disc related conditions that lead to sciatica problems is called non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. A highly recognized device that has been shown to provide back pain relief for symptoms associated with herniated disc, bulging or protruding intervertebral discs and degenerative disc disease is called the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Spinal Decompression System.

This particular form of therapy is both non-invasive and non-surgical. Through the application of spinal decompressive forces to compressive and degenerative injuries of the spine, the DRX9000 has given patients relief from painful symptoms and has allowed them to resume a healthy normal life.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from an intervertebral disc condition that is causing painful sciatica symptoms, contact your local DRX9000 physician to learn more about non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. To view available clinical research data on the DRX9000, please click here.

Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy Considered an Effective Treatment Option For Back Pain?

Learn more about non-surgical spinal decompression therapy and the DRX9000 for chronic back pain relief.

By Rick Durand

With millions of back pain sufferers worldwide searching for alternative ways to find chronic back pain relief, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy arises. Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy has successfully treated many back pain sufferers who received unsatisfactory results with traditional treatment methods such as bed rest, physical therapy, pain medications, acupuncture, surgery and traction. As new clinical research demonstrating the positive outcomes of this form of therapy continues to surface, it may not take long before it is widely considered to be an effective treatment option for chronic back pain conditions.

In a recent study published in Pain Practice, patient outcomes indicated that chronic low back pain improved with treatment on the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Spinal Decompression System.

The study titled, "Treatment of 94 Outpatients With Chronic Discogenic Low Back Pain with the DRX9000: A Retrospective Chart Review" indicated that patients with a mean pain duration of 535 weeks (Over 10 years) reported a mean verbal numerical pain intensity rating equal to 6.05 on a 0 to 10 scale prior to treatment with the DRX9000.

Patients were treated at four clinics throughout the United States. They received 30-minute DRX9000 sessions daily for the first 2 weeks tapering to 1 session/week.

After the completion of the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Spinal Decompression System therapy, the mean verbal numerical pain intensity rating decreased to a statistically and clinically significant rating of 0.89.

Furthermore, patients also reported a decrease in analgesic use and improvement in activities of daily living.

The authors were able to follow-up at a mean 31 weeks with 29 patients and reveal mean values of 83% improvement in back pain and satisfaction of 8.55 on a 10-point scale. None of these 29 patients reported requiring surgery. The authors also acknowledge that there are other spinal decompression systems available commercially. However, they suggest that the design difference between these devices, "may lead to differing physical responses to therapy, so studies of one type of apparatus should not readily be applied across all machines."

As more clinical research demonstrating positive results utilizing this form of treatment is disseminated, the question may no longer be whether it's effective but rather who offers it.

Does Weight Management Play a Role in Pre and Post Non-surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy Health?

by Rick Durand

In addition to the millions of back pain sufferers in the United States, there is also a large percentage of the population that is diagnosed as obese. Is there a correlation between the two? Maybe, maybe not. But, for those individuals who are suffering from chronic back pain conditions and have been clinically diagnosed as obese, it is a certainty that weight management may play a vital role in their future health.

It is important to educate the obese chronic back pain patient that has successfully completed non-surgical spinal decompression therapy that they should strive for a healthy bodyweight. Excess bodyweight that creates unnecessary stress on a previously injured intervertebral disc is likely to aggravate the patient's back injury in the future. Fortunately, weight management is a lifestyle change that can be successfully implemented with the proper education, counseling, and follow up.

Weight management is described as the modification of daily caloric intake versus energy expenditure with the goal of obtaining and maintaining a satisfactory bodyweight. Depending on the patient's lifestyle and/or career, he or she may have to drastically decrease their daily caloric intake in order to achieve a healthy bodyweight. Weight management is a science, but with the proper caloric intake formula an individual can make the necessary modifications to his/her diet and activity level to obtain and maintain a healthy bodyweight.

How is the proper caloric intake equation formulated? The calculations are as abundant as the number of dieting gurus and the number of dieting books being published on the subject. However, the majority of physicians begin the process by evaluating the patient's body weight and height. This will determine the patient's general overweight/underweight condition. This calculation process is defined as the Body Mass Index (BMI). Another factor taken into consideration, along with daily activity levels, is the fact that a patient's body weight and shape can also be influenced by genetics. Metabolic rate, in some cases, is an example of a genetic factor that is taken into consideration when calculating the proper daily caloric intake for an individual.

Utilizing the Body Mass Index (BMI) and other factors, physicians are able to formulate their caloric intake recommendations.

In conclusion, a patient who is obese and is suffering from a chronic back pain condition should maintain their caloric intake at a level suggested by their physician in order to lower any excess pressure to the spine. Neglecting weight management recommendations could hinder the body's response to treatment and may aggravate a previous back injury in the future.

Conventional Treatment Methods For the Relief of Back Pain

Learn what traditional treatment methods were available for back pain sufferers prior to the DRX9000.

by Rick Durand

Conventional treatment methods for back pain patients are a large healthcare expense. Some conventional approaches focus only on the symptoms rather than the primary source of the pain. Once the source of the back pain is corrected, a patient may experience long-term relief. The following types of treatment methods are the most commonly used.

Occasionally, bed rest is prescribed for back pain patients. The downfall of this treatment method is that patients may be more likely to develop depression and experience other negative effects.

Another common treatment method for back pain is physical therapy. Certain exercises can improve the general function and strength of the spine, but may not address the primary cause of a patient's back pain.

Oral and injectable pain medications will normally function by temporarily decreasing inflammation, muscle spasm and pain. This treatment method will only alleviate symptoms, but seldom does it deal with the primary cause of pain.

One treatment method introduced over 2,500 years ago is called acupuncture. It is a form of treatment where by needles are inserted into various parts of the body, such as in ankles, knees, or fingers for the treatment of back pain.

A treatment method that attempts to correct the primary source of back pain is surgery. Some patients report significant relief of pain after surgery, but the risks involved make this option a last resort for many.

A commonly used technique is called traction. Manual traction can be performed by a therapist, utilizing their weight to change both the force and direction of pull. Auto traction is when the patient controls the traction forces by grabbing and pulling on the end of the traction table. There are other forms of traction available such as bed rest traction, underwater and gravitational traction.

A relatively new treatment method for the relief of chronic low back pain is called non-surgical spinal decompression. A highly recognized device called the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Spinal Decompression System is designed to provide pain relief for compressive and degenerative injuries of the spine. Through the application of spinal decompressive forces to these injuries, patients have found relief from their back pain problems.

While back pain is a common and debilitating condition, patients today have more treatment options than ever before.

Conventional Treatment Process For a Back Pain Patient and the DRX9000

By Rick Durand

As our society continues to grow and our personal health diminishes due to poor eating habits or stress, the number of back pain problems may increase dramatically over the next decade. Traditional treatment methods for the relief of back pain have remained constant, but a relatively new treatment option referred to as non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, has demonstrated great promise in the treatment of chronic back pain.

Up to this point, it has not been entirely integrated into the continuum of care in treating back pain, but that has not stopped many physicians from offering or recommending the treatment to their patients. There are hundreds of doctors among the various specialties that are currently offering this treatment option. Most specialists offer back pain sufferers some sort of technique or a particular level of expertise. Although the backgrounds and expertise of physicians that offer this particular treatment option may vary, the outcome of the DRX9000 protocol and the health benefits that result from non-surgical spinal decompression therapy remain consistent.

The Initial Process

Most back pain sufferers begin their treatment process at the general practitioner's office. Considering back pain is a common problem, it would be easy to assume that the general practitioner is an expert in the treatment of back pain. This may not be the case. The primary care physician will assist in determining if the pain is serious or not. After reviewing the medical history and the test results of the patient, the primary care physician will then determine what the next step should be. Pain medication, bed rest and exercise may be prescribed. In addition, a visit with a back pain specialist may be recommended.

Back Pain Doctors Who May Offer Non-surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy

In the past, chiropractic care was not given much attention by the medical community. However, chiropractors are now considered to be the alternative treatment experts by providing care through spinal adjustments. Similar to how medical doctors have distinct specialties, chiropractic care techniques may differ among chiropractors.

Osteopaths look at a patient from a more "complete" point of view. They may look into environmental, stress, social, psychological and physical factors. Although an osteopath may prescribe pain medication and surgery, they focus more on the relationship of the organs and the musculoskeletal system. Emphasizing a holistic approach, osteopaths focus on the benefits of spinal manipulation.

A physical therapist manually focuses on the joints, muscles and soft tissues. Along with prescribed treatment, a physical therapist may also educate patients on how to properly stretch and move about with a painful back. Most physical therapists today specialize in spine and neck therapy.

A medical doctor who specializes in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and spinal cord injuries is the physiatrist. A physiatrist may also have a subspecialty in sports medicine. They may treat back injuries or post-surgery problems with epidural injections. However, considered to be experts in non-surgical treatment options, a physiatrist may stick to an exercise regimen and the use of back braces.

As a bone and joints specialist, an orthopedist may meet with patients at all levels of care. An orthopedist may prescribe drugs, along with tests to determine if a patient is a surgical candidate. Even though orthopedic surgeons administer surgical procedures, they often treat patients non-surgically.

Neurosurgeons diagnose and treat disorders of the spine, nerve tissue and peripheral nerves both non-surgically and surgically.

As more back pain specialists learn about the healthcare benefits of utilizing non-surgical spinal decompression therapy for the treatment of back pain, the more likely it is to be offered by most specialties. Although non-surgical spinal decompression therapy has not yet been incorporated into the established curriculum of back pain care, it may not be long before it is considered the standard for the treatment of back pain.

If you are suffering from a back pain condition and would like to find out if you're a candidate for this procedure, contact your nearest back pain physician to learn more.
