The fictional Dune universe is the political, scientific, and social setting of author Frank Herbert's six-book Dune series of science fantasy novels. The highly popular first book, 1965's Dune, was adapted into a film in 1984 and a televised miniseries in 2000; in 2003, its first two sequels appeared as a miniseries as well. The Dune universe has inspired a series of video games, including Dune II, the first modern real-time strategy game.

This lens looks at each segment of the series, with links to more in depth material elsewhere on the web.

The DUNE Trilogy

DUNE (1965), Dune Messiah (1969), and Children of Dune (1976) were the original books in the series.

Set in a far future universe, these books incorporate various political and religious themes for Earth's cultures, making the human element more sympathetic and the story more "believable".

Against a backdrop of interstellar politics and religious maneuvering, the novels follow the life of a young man, Paul Atreides, who is destined to be a great leader, and his heirs.

The first trilogy spawned a second, which includes the titles God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), and Chapterhouse Dune (1985), which continue to follow the Atreides family, their allies, and their rivals.

Prequels to Dune

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was not the end to the Dune chronicles. Working from his father's notes, which he discovered nearly a decade later, Brian Herbert collaborated with science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson to release an additional two trilogies. Prelude to Dune traces the origins of the three main families in the series, while Legends of Dune is set at an earlier time in history, when humans and sentient machines waged war against one another.
Two other books, Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, which conclude the story of the original series, have also been put out by these collaborators based on an outline Frank Herbert created for a work he had titled Dune 7.

What's New

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have announced plans for a new trilogy in the Dune series, the first installment of which, tentatively titled Paul of Dune, is set to be released in late 2008. Reportedly it will be followed by Jessica of Dune and Irulan of Dune.
