The Dallas Stars -- Cool Team in a Hot Place!

Dallas is definitely a warm-weather city. In fact, during the Summer it is downright HOT! But once the NHL season begins, thousands of North Texans forget the heat and flock to the American Airlines Center in Dallas to watch their hockey team, THE DALLAS STARS, take on invaders from the North in that venerable test of true manhood...ice hockey!

The Dallas (North) Stars?

Minnesota North StarsBelieve it or not, the Dallas Stars have not always been a Dallas fixture! In fact, they haven't even always been the Stars! The Dallas Stars are (GASP!) transplanted Yankees!

Although up to ten teams were a part of the National Hockey League during its early years, beginning in the 1942-43 season the league operated with six teams. On March 11, 1965, NHL President Clarence Campbell announced that the league would expand to twelve teams hrough the creation of a new six-team division for the 1967-68 season. The California Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Minnesota North Stars joined the league at that time.

The expansion teams experienced limited success for quite some time. The California Seals traveled and especially bumpy road. They were renamed Oakland Seals, a name which would later transform to the California Golden Seals. The team was eventually relocated to Cleveland in 1976, where they operated as the Cleveland Barons for two seasons. The club was not able to overcome financial difficulties was merged into the into Minnesota North Stars in 1978.

The North Stars had some success in Minnesota, but the ownership was not popular with fans, and the team went several years without earning a profit. They also could not make a deal for a new arena. As a result, on March 11, 1993 team owner Norman Green and Dallas Mayor Steve Bartlett announced that the Minnesota North Stars would become the Dallas Stars.

What Better Gift Than A Ticket To The Game?

I grew up on Long Island, discovering the New York Rangers when I was in fourth grade. I was immediately hooked on the NHL. I still remember Christmas, 1964. I can't tell you anything else that I got that year, but I can tell you that a ticket to a Rangers game was the gift that impressed me the most. A gift of tickets to a Stars game will be a big hit with someone you care about!

Hockey For Dummies

Like its teammates in the Dummies series, Hockey for Dummies is cleverly organized and clearly focused, geared to both fans and players. It is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10 best things about the game, the 10 best players, the 10 best teams, and, given even a novice's inability to mistake hockey for Zen, the 10 best hitters. Hockey for Dummies also contains plenty of good, practical advice: Wayne Gretzky offers a clinic on passing, Mark Messier hosts one on face-offs, Brian Leetch presents clinics on defense, and Ron Hextall teaches goaltending. Authors John Davidson and John Steinbreder explain rules, discuss equipment, and strategies. They even give pointers on how best to appreciate the game on television.
