Is the concept of "personal branding" essential for today's workforce?

Absolutely! Me 2.0 demonstrates the power of personal branding!
sallemange says:
Absouletly. I'm so pleased people believe this. I once went for a job at Experian in the UK and the marketing guy told me I was stupid for thinking that people could be brands. Looks like he branded himself as ignorant!
I'm not sold yet.
spirituality says:
I'm definitely not sold. I mean - sure, successful people are brands, however I'm not sure they became brands by trying to brand themselves. It's more like that for successful people everything aligns: they're image, their talents, their skills. For most people it's not aligned. They may have chosen a skill-set that doesn't fit their personality, for instance. That sort of fundamental problem is not solved by 'branding' yourself.
However, I do think branding yourself is essential for entrepreneurs. Especially the freelance kind.
