Iran is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. As Iran is a littoral state of the Caspian Sea, which is an inland sea and condominium, Kazakhstan and Russia are also Iran's direct neighbors to the north. Iran is a founding member of the UN, NAM, OIC and OPEC. The political system of Iran, based on the 1979 Constitution, comprises several intricately connected governing bodies. The highest state authority is the Supreme Leader. Shia Islam is the official religion and Persian is the official language.

Darius I of Persia (550?486 BCE) also known as Darius the Great was the third Achaemenid Zoroastrian emperor. Darius held the Persian Empire at its strongest peak, and the decay and downfall of the empire commenced with his death and the coronation of his son, Xerxes I.

Darius ascended the throne by assassinating the alleged usurper Bardiya with the assistance of six other Persian noble families. The next morning Darius was crowned emperor. Following this, Darius met with rebellions throughout the Empire which Darius squashed each time. A major event in Darius's life was his expedition to punish Athens and Eretria and subjugate Greece. During the first two attempts, Darius was unsuccessful and died during his third attempt, leaving it to Xerxes to finish the invasion. Darius added to the empire by conquering Thrace and Macedon, invading the Saka, which were Iranian tribes who had invaded Medes and even killed Cyrus the Great.

Darius organized the empire, by dividing it into provinces and placing governors to govern it. He set a new monetary system, along with making Armaic the official language of the empire. Darius also worked on construction projects throughout the empire, primarily on Susa, Babylon, and Egypt. As well, Darius created a codification of laws for Egypt.
