A guide to Europe's River Danube

Useful tourist information and up to date news about the Danube and the Danube Bike Trail, which has long been a great source of inspiration for writers, artists and musicians . Much has been written in praise of the River Danube and this page provides a comprehensive survey of what makes the Danube so special to many Europeans.

Europe's River Danube is indeed a magnet for travellers and holds a special place in the heart of many.

As Ratty said in Wind in the Willows,"The River, It's my world, and I don't want any other. What it hasn't got is not worth having."

The second longest river in Europe, the Danube has its source as a small stream in Germany's Black Forest and it then flows for a distance of about 2850 km (1770 mi), developing into a mighty navigable river that passes through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania, where it finally empties into the Black Sea.

The source of the Danube

Donaueschingen and the Black Forest

The source of the Danube is to be found at Donaueschingen, in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald). As with the specific location of the source of many great rivers, the actual source of the Danube, or Die Donau as it is known in Germany, is a topic of much academic debate. However, Donaueschingen provides a photographic opportunity for tourists and it is a picturesque town with pretty Art Nouveau houses and also a royal palace.

The Black Forest is one of the most famous and fascinating unspoiled landscapes of Europe. Its valleys and hills are ideal for hiking , mountain biking, kayaking, surfing and winter cross-country skiing. It enjoys some great cuisine, notably Black Forest gateau and I have written about my encounter with Kirschwasser, Cherry water it is not.

A wonderful photograph of the Danube by Donaueschingen, Germany. Two small rivers, the Breg and the Brigach, unite into the River Danube. The German's call this Donauzusammenfluss. The Danube Bike Trail, Donauradweg

The Danube Cycle Path runs the complete length of the Danube!

The Danube Bike Trail (Donauradweg) originally ran between Donaueschingen and Vienna but now runs the complete length of the Danube and is conveniently divided into four sections:
Donaueschingen-Passau, a length of 559 km
Passau to Vienna, a length of 340 km
Vienna to Budapest, a length of 306 km
Budapest to the Black Sea, a length of 1670 km

In Tales from here and there about this and that, I have written a series of articles about major towns and cities along the course of the River Danube.
Danube Cycle Route to Ulm - Read more
Ulm is the first major city on the Danube after its source at Donaueschingen; strictly speaking it is the twin cities of the Danube, since there is Ulm and New Ulm on either side of the river. Albert Einstein, was born in Bahnhofstr, Ulm and it was once the site of an ancient Roman fortress and now home to the world's tallest cathedral spire, 161 metres and 768 steps to the highest viewpoint for those that wish to make the climb!. Use the link above to read more about Ulm and the Danube Cycle Path between Donaueschingen and Ulm
Earthly Pleasures at Kloster Weltenburg - Read more
Picking up the Danube Cycle Route once more at Ulm, our journey along the Danube (Donau) starts to get serious now as we head towards the Alps. In this leg we will go through Donauwörth, an old trading port, Ingolstadt with its beautiful white Neues Schloß (castle), Kelheim with the magical Kloster Weltenburg, nestling on the river bank, near the entrance to the scenic Danube gorge and finally, reach the great Bavarian city of Regensburg. Use the link above to read more about the route between Ulm and Regensburg.
Regensburg - Read more
There is so much to write about the historic city of Regensburg that it deserves separate mention. Regensburg is located at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers, just as the Danube bends and heads towards Passau. To its east lies the Bavarian Forest and the city is divided by the Danube with the Alstadt (Old Town) to the south. The Alstadt has been uniquely preserved, with its medieval character carefully conserved by excluding vehicles, with the exception of buses and taxis. Read more about Regensburg using the link above.
The Danube through East Bavaria - Read more
Continuing our tour along the Danube (Donau), this article covers Regensburg to Passau where the Danube converges with the Inn and Ilz rivers. It is the last leg before the majestic river leaves Germany and heads into Austria. Passau is known as the 'Venice of the Danube' because it has many buildings in the style of medieval Italian Baroque and being situated at the confluence of three rivers, has extensive river frontage. The link above is to an extensive article discussing the bike trail from Regensburg along the Danube to Passau, which is one of Germany's favorite cycle paths. Konstantinos Dafalias took this beautiful photograph of the Danube near Linz, Austria.
Linz - Read more
After Passau is the ancient city of Linz. Like many towns along the Danube (Donau), it started life as a Celtic settlement and was then developed by the Romans for its strategic importance, situated as it is on a bend in the river.

Linz became the capital of Upper Austria and an important commercial centre, located on the old Salt Road. It is still the second largest city in Austria and has an international airport, the largest port on the Danube and is on the Westbahn, the railway linking Austria and Germany.
Blue Danube Vienna - Read more
Vienna is about 1.5 hours by car / train from Linz, or of course, you can take the prettier and more sedate route along the river.

Vienna's cultural life is wide and varied. You have the choice of 50 theatres, four opera houses, two stages for musicals, 100 museums and numerous theatre, music and dance festivals but it is particularly known as the city of music, not least because of Johann Strauss II who is known as the waltz king and is particularly well-known for his Blue Danube Walz and the lively operetta Die Fledermaus.
Bratislava - Read more
Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. It is only about 60km away from Vienna and there are good road, rail and ferry links; the rail and the high speed ferry both have a journey time of about 1hour 15minutes. Bratislava lies on both banks of the Danube, and fitting for a city on this great river, where the Danube forms a common bond between people lining its shores, it is the only capital city in the world that borders two other countries, Austria and Hungary.
Budapest - Read more
Over half a million visitors enjoy the traditional nature of the Budapest Christmas Market, with its Hungarian customs, traditional food and drink, folk arts and crafts and bands playing traditional and folk music.

This is a city with many festivals throughout the year and is a great tourist destinations, with a lot of history and architecture. Plus of course, the attraction of the Danube itself. The read more link is to a video tour, which gives a good impression of this attractive city.
