Torres, married and divorced Jeff Gowen, a sports producer, but maintained fit running and cycling in Central Park, Even playing basketball at the Reebok gym. But in the spring of 1999, despite not having been in a pool, except to cool down, in seven years, Torres decided she wanted to compete in the 2000 games. Later on she moved to California to train.

Dara Torres Workout
Here is the "INSIDE"story on how tshe got her Olympic body
Dara Torres workout programs does not consist of heavy weight lifting as most people would assume. In fact as Torres moves further into middle age her workouts are just about completely out of the pool.
She usually has a two-hour water workout and then along with her strength coach, Andy O'Brien, who is also the strength coach of the Florida Panthers hockey team. She begins her "land based' workout.
O'Brien has moved Torres away from heavy weight-lifting and towards training using dynamic exercises that stimulate her central nervous system. "The idea is not to isolate muscle groups but to get muscles contracting together in the right sequences," O'Brien explains.
Weight training, he notes, developed from muscle building and that low-rep high-weight custom is poorly suitable since as a sprinter a body comprised of muscles that have been trained to bring about power alone consumes sizeable energy attempting to move. O'Brien says speed comes by extremely interconnected movements and smooth timing.

Following his advise Torres is twelve lbs lighter, more powerful and a lot more cut than in 2000.
Torres stated that it required her head coach, Lohberg, a bit of time to adopt O'Brien's program, but she says, "I'm swimming really fast now, so he can't complain."
Torres works out for 60 to 90 mins, 4 times per week.
