Dark Heresy is a role-playing game based on Games-Workshop's famous tabletop game Warhammer 40.000. The key feature of the game is the very dark and gothic background of Warhammer, which adds nicely to the investigative, agent-like gameplay of Dark Heresy. The Players take the roles of Acolytes working for their Inquisitor boss doing his dirty work, which means cleaning out the Imperium from all the dangers that lurk within. The Gamemaster has a huge arsenal of super villains, monsters, heretics, and other warp-spawned diseases, that the Acolytes (meaning you, the potential new participant in the Inquisitors gang) may face.

My review of this game

"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment."

The game is based on ages-old d10 game mechanics, so nothing special about that. The Career path character advancement is known from the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay so no innovation either. Due to Games-Workshop's decision to transfer the rights for the Dark-Heresy series from Black Library to Fantasy Flight Games the release schedule is a bit behind and some books will inevitably change.
Dark Heresy really shines when it comes to Setting, Flair, Atmosphere. The rulebooks are very beautiful with lots of details, excellent typography and great artwork. There are lots of little stories to get a feel for the whole universe and life in the Warhammer world.

There are lots of novels by BlackLibrary that take place in the Dark Heresy background, most prominently the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series.
