Dateline's To Catch A Predator With Chris Hansen Is Trash Television
Let me start by saying that I think that sexual predators should be stopped and that I believe that trying to lure an under aged person to meet for a sexual encounter is absolutely wrong and disgusting. However, Chris Hansen and Dateline go too far with their series To Catch A Predator.
I feel that To Catch A Predator, which works with underground online watch group Perverted Justice, may have been worthy of Datelines attention for one or two episodes to show some light on the problem of sexual predators on the Internet. However, doing it again and again seems tedious and sleazy. There certainly is an element of entrapment that I find obvious about this program.
Another reason I find this show disgusting is the sensational element of the show. While I do not have any sympathy of the men on the show for their predatory habits, I do feel for their exploitation for good TV ratings. The men are trapped with a "deer in the headlights" look as they are busted and realize that their lives as they know it have forever been changed.
While the program hopefully may have stopped some predators before they could strike, it is also at least partially responsible in at least one suicide and scores of lives and families of the men caught on the show being torn apart.

My 2 cents: At first my wife and I really got into this show the same way we got into COPS years ago. You're like, "Scumbags! You will sit and rot in ....!" Then, something weird happened. Our opinion changed. Not as far as sympathy to the all the sickos being exposed, but we started to feel that the show was turning into another cheap, reality TV program. Then came the kicker... Mr. "walk on water" Hansen boy, got caught with his pants down!! No, it wasn't anything to do with children or the sickness he interviews on "Predator" but it was still pretty crappy. Yes, people have affairs (adults) all the time. However, for me, it was similar to my Ex-Pastor who would teach classes on adultery and preach about how much of a sin it was to be unfaithful to your spouse. Guess what happened, a few years later he was caught cheating on his wife with one of the (also married) choir girls!!! Conclusion? If you are gonna preach it to high heaven, especially you Hansen, and profit off what you preach, then you better as heck practice it FAITHFULLY!!

And if this sensationalist entertainment show thinly disguised as a "legitimate" investigation results in suicides, misreported charge dismissals, and devastated families shamed on national television and shunned in their daily lives because their brother/father/son did something incredibly stupid, so what right? I feel that some of these guys are messed up & need to be taught a lesson, but at the same time, I feel bad for the 18, 19, 20 year old KIDS that are going to meet up with these supposed teenage girls who really aren't that much younger then them and there lives are completely ruined forever for nothing. I mean think about it a 22 year old dating a 29 year old is completely acceptable, yet a 20 year old is publicly humiliated and prosecuted for going to meet a 16 year old girl...some of the guys on the show I've seen can't be that much older then 19, 20. I actually believe these people are being arrested for what is in their minds. There is definitely reasonable doubt. Think about it; They cybered and met with adults and there is something called roleplay. Ok now I admit it looks most likely they were still coming to meet kids. All in all, we live in a nation innocent until proven guilty. Really all the evidence is just whats in the alleged mind. Is that really admissable? Throw in the fact that when they are being questioned by police, there are cameras and you have a clear cut case of invasion of privacy. Yes pedofilia needs to be stopped but not by the media with a ratings agenda. They need to be stopped by law enforcement. Clearly unconstitional as well and throw in entrapment.

Well, firstly - let's get something clear. None of these guys are child molesters, and they're not pedophiles. Not even by canon definition - the girls they believe they're soliciting are fourteen, sixteen and even seventeen years old, which in many states is around and above the age of consent, which is an element of this thing that's very hazy, morally. This is not weird or unusual, to find a teenage girl attractive, no matter how old the guy might be - I don't even know how that idea got around, because it's mind-bogglingly ridiculous. And, regardless of how immoral you might think the acts they're planning to commit to these imaginary girls are, that kind of thing also isn't really that unusual - whether its between teenagers, between an older guy/girl and a younger girl/guy, or whatever. Many times it is the contacts who urge and initiate the whole sexual aspect of the conversation, which is pretty clear cut entrapment, and gives the whole show a pulpy air of sensationalism that doesn't really amount to anything. This show is a mess.

What the do on this show may technically not be entrapment, it is wrong how Perverted Justice goes about enticing those pervs in those chatrooms to chat about having sex. The entrapment is obvious, and worse, no actual crime is ever committed. There is no victim. There's only two middle-aged men roleplaying prepubescence. Joe McCarthy's witch hunt lost all credibility when he was on national TV talking about Communists in the FBI. The Constitution gives you a right to face your accuser, and I want to see the 49 year old desk cop who pretended to be fourteen on the witness stand, fake crying about how a caught predator wanted to child molest him. Then we'll see who can deny the insanity and sensationalism at work here.

I detest child molestation as much as the next guy, but I feel it does no good to go after the wrong people. As far as I know, Chris Hansen doesn't have the qualifications of a psychiatrist, which is what most of these guys need. Also, women molest children too, but I don't think I ever saw a single case on his show involving a woman "Predator". I feel he needs to get his head out of his ass so he can do some reading to learn what a true "Predator" is. I think he has one primary motivation, and that is for financial gain from the show as well as his book sales for a book that probably is a waste of the paper its printed on. For all we know, Chris Hansen himself may have molested or currently is molesting his own children since in most cases of molestation it is the biological or step-father of the children that perpetrates the crime. I also think he uses sensationalism and those police officers that pounce on those guys and in 9 times out of ten they use excessive force on the alleged perpetrators who usually do not give one bit of resistance prior to them assaulting the alleged perpetrator. I guess an IQ test is not one of the tools used in determining who becomes a police officer, or maype they prefer to hire police officers with below average IQ's

My problem is several fold. At first I was gung-ho about the show. Yeah, take down those sickos and embarass them.
Then I began to think things through a bit. Anyone that wants to have sex with a child is mentally disturbed. Anyone disagree? Then why coerce this disorder out of someone and flagrantly parade around national television? Would you do this with someone with schizophrenia? Make fun of the voices they hear in their heads? No. It's not right in that sense.
Another problem is the fact that the justice system eventually got involved. Almost every case that has been put in court has been thrown out. Why? Because of a number of reasons including inadmissable evidence. Why would a judge use a chat log generated by a third party as evidence? Why would the POLICE use this as evidence against someone? It's not. Any number of statements in those logs could have been fabricated. In fact, it almost all could have.
This was theatrics and nothing more. These men have something wrong with them. They do not need to get thrown in prison where they won't last long or eventually let back on the streets to repeat-offend. They need to be forced into psychiatric institutions and given help for their problem.
I've come to view the show, from start to finish, as garbage. Sure, you get the occassional laugh like the guy that wanted to have sex with a cat. But if someone wants to have sex with a cat and a 14 year old kid, they need to be given counseling because they HAVE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM.

I saw a couple of episodes and wasn't too impressed. There was one guy they had caught once before and he was obviously very mentally retarded. I don't know if you should lock up a MR man who has the mental capacity of an 8 year old. Also I heard there was one bust they didn't show when a 14 year old boy turned out to meet a 15 year old girl. He told her he was 19. His reason was that girls his age liked older guys.

This show is disgusting!! First of all, teens are not children. They are young adults and they make adult decisions and know right from wrong. The teen years used to be the primary age, mostly teen females, when people got married. And it has always been common for the husband/man to be older. Evidence of this fact dates back as far as back as biblical times where it was very common for thirteen - sixteen year old women to be marrying men 30, 40, 50 + (i.e. Read the book of Ruth and her desire to marry Boaz. These men haven’t actually done anything with under age women and they have had their lives ruined because of this “SHOWS” Desire for RATINGS and greed for money. Remember folks, in the past, it was majority of women that got married in their early to mid teens and had families. STOP believing the lies that adults in their teen years are children. I don't see how it's entrapment. It's the law, and made very clear in the show, that the "girls and boys" don't bring up sex or meeting in person first. They simply go where whatever the older person takes them.

While the show certainly seems to be for entertainment purposes more recently, it's most certainly not entrapment. They've stated on several occasions that they wait for contact and do not initiate. They wait for men to suggest meeting. Do they lie? Of course. Entrapment has nothing to do with lying. For reference, entrapment is only when the cop CONVINCES someone to commit a crime they otherwise wouldn't do. I.E. Leaving a running car empty across the street with the doors unlocked while waiting in the bushes. This show is, essentially, an officer in skimpy clothing waiting on the street for men who think she's a prostitute. They're not propositioning people, they're waiting for those people to come to them. Furthermore, they are under no legal obligation to tell anyone they are cops while undercover. If that was the case, undercover work would be useless. Even without all of these facts, the show is probably a deterrent.

That would have happened either way, whether it be that he got caught on national T.V. or whether he was put into GP of a prison and either beaten to death or committed suicide in there. Statutory rape laws exist in very state. There is a reason we have laws, regulations and methods of preventing people from corrupting the youth. INMATES don't even like them....are you friggin kiddin me.....This show was awesome, for exposing teachers, pastors, and that one Doctor LMFAO,....this way when I see one of those sick asses on the street I can point them out, they should be embarassed, oh and I don't really feel sorry for the guy that committed suicide, the only thing I felt was for his family that they had to live that dude's sick lie. Feel sorry nope, Great show!!!!
