Our Day Trip With Photos to the Frankenmuth, Michigan Woolen Mill
There is a small town in Michigan called Frankenmuth. It is a wonderful German town that lives life as it did a hundred years ago. My husband James (he is in the picture) love to drive to Frankenmuth, it is a lovely day trip. This day we visited a Woolen Mill.
If you are an avid knitter like I am you know you can not have enough yarn. That is a fact. But have you ever wondered where all that yarn comes from. Sure, you might say it is from the store. Ha ha, okay seriously.
It comes from sheep and assorted other animals. But how does it get from the animal to the store?
Well this is what I found out in my trip through the Woolen Mill.
Come along, I'll show you what I learned.

The Very Sweet Lady That Owns and Runs the Mill with Her Husband
She is So helpful and generous. Her name is Kate. She let us go through the entire Mill and we got such an education. It was wonderful. And she runs a shop with yarn and things made from the product of the Mill.
Some Of the Wonderful Yarns That Have Come From the Mill
Oh! It is All So Beautiful!
An unbelievable selection of yarns and handmade things. Gorgeous!
Oops! That's my James again. :)
Some Felted Slippers from the Dyed Rovings
The Actual Beginning
This was such an interesting picture to me. It really shows the whole story. It is of course a composite picture. But you can she the shearing of the sheep. Before and after shearing. Really interesting.
The Process Begins With Washing All That Dirty Wool!
Remember this comes off a farm animal. They have straw, dirt, stones, poop and everything else in their coats. It has to come clean.
The actual first step is picking the wool by hand. People actually hand pick the wool to pick out the obvious straw, rocks or whatever.
Then it is washed in these huge vats of water and detergent. The water is 150 degrees Fahrenheit. And it is washed and washed until it is very clean.
It was an amazing process to watch the young man using his rake to keep agitating the wool in the soapy water.
Some of the Clean, Washed Wool in a Box waiting for drying.
Next The Wool has to be Picked Again
The next step is to Pick the wool on the Big Machines. When the wool is dryed it is in those curly rovings, It needs to be spread apart in a more loose fashion.
This is one of those machines. These machines are all original equipment. And it is all maintained and repaired by the Mill Workers. There are about 25 employed workers at this Mill.
Most of the machinery in the country (USA) has been sent to China. And is no longer a craft of America. There are only a few Mills still operating. So they have to be self sufficient in their running of the mills.
This Is A Huge Carding Machine
This Macine has thousands of little steel needles on all those rolls. As the picked and clean wool runs across them it pulls them apart and flat
This is How it Finally Comes Off the Machine
Comes off in very soft roving.

Here is an Overview of the Giant Carding Machines.
The Roving is Laid Out To Dry on Wooden Shelves
Sock Knitting Machine
This is truly amazing, This has so many pieces to it, I can not imagine how anyone would be able to repair it. But this huge machine can knit a pair of socks in 6 seconds!!
No joking, SIX Seconds!
I hope you can see all the spools of yarn at the back of the machine and all the lines of yarn.
They had a long row of these sock knitting machines in a row. Unbelievable!
The Room At the Top of the Mill that they make their quilts.
Look at that beautiful Quilt batting. I love it!
A Unique Quit Pattern. Beautiful!
Rolls of Quilting Batting
Remember this all came off those huge carding machines. Giant rolls of it.
Their Huge Quilting Rack. Nice Equipment!
This is Clean Dyed Locks
This has not been picked for the second time by machine. So it is really curly. But is is so soft. Unbelievable.
Think about it, have you ever seen a straight hair sheep?
You will Never Believe What This Is
This is actually Buffalo Wool! This wool has been picked many times and carded twice and this is what is the undercoat of the Buffalo after carding. It is So soft you wouldn't believe it.
The problem is it takes so much of their wool to get a little of this it is VERY expensive.
There are other by products of the Buffalo wool But nothing compared to this.
This is A Yarn Spooling Machine. It Takes The Plyed Yarn and Puts it Onto Spools.
This is the final product. All that gorgeous yarn is now put in a format that the consumer can handle and put to crafty use.
This Machine is the Ply Machine
After the roving has come off the carding machine in those huge rolls at the top of the machine, it is put through this machine and plyed. Into 2 ply, or 3 ply, or 4 ply, or sock yarn, or whatever. It then will go through the spooling machine. that we saw above.

A Most Amazing Day!
This was a wonderful day for Jim and I. It was so interesting to learn about an industry that is so huge in our country, but has become outsourced to other lands.
And to find people that care so much about a dieing art form that they are single handedly keeping it alive in this area. One of the few in this country that remains a family operated Woolen Mill.
It was truly fascinating, and I hope you were able to glean a little of the experience within this lens. I wish you could have been with us.

- Hi, Susan! I saw this link on Webnuggetz! What a great lens! Buffalo wool, how I wish I could try to spin that! I'm a handspinner and I've got the American Satin Angora bunnies here in Spain. Satin Angora is just so luxurious! I don't think one needs to be a squid angel to bless your article, I bless it, too, because it's just so great. And a very well deserved purple star! This article is unique for a handspinner like me! Thanks so much for sharing!

- It was an enjoyable day, visiting Frankenmuth with my cousins, Mike, Susan and Jim. Susan and I are the fiberholics in the family. She knits and crochets, and I raise sheep and have the fiber processed at Zeilinger's Woolen Mill in Frankenmuth (pictured in this lens) or Stonehedge Fiber Mill in East Jordan.
Susan, you did a great job! For any of you that would like to visit Frankenmuth and Zeilinger's Woolen Mill--the mill is located on Weiss Street, near Bronner's huge holiday store. You can visit their website: www.zool.com.
thanks, Judy

- Hello Susan/James, that was really fascinating. The Bradford link was interesting too. Duncan comes from that area and keeps promising to take me to the Media Museum there - one day?! I remember with a smile the day we four spent in Fraankenburg and this made me look again at the photos. Love from us both Jackie & Duncan xx
