Your Dog Just Got Skunked! Help is Here.

Chances are that the cute little Pepe' LaPew we all grew up with isn't the skunk your dog or cat met up with. There is allot of bad information out there about how to treat an animal that has been sprayed. Here I will dispel some of those myths and urban legends. Not to worry though, I will give you a sure fire way to deSkunk your animals.

DO THIS FIRST!!!

No matter how bad your pet stinks this is a must!

First and foremost your pets well being is number 1! The majority of the time an animal will get sprayed in the neck area. This is because your dog was pestering the skunk in some way and they will turn their head to avoid the spray. So go ahead and put the clothes pen on your nose and check your pet. By the way the clothes pen won't help, it just makes your mouth taste bad.

Check your Pet! Let me say that again...Check your Pet!
If your pet was sprayed in the eyes get them to a vet asap. Being sprayed in the eyes won't cause blindness, however it is VERY painful. If you see any blood on your pet get them to a vet ASAP! Skunks are carriers of Rabies, if your pet has had its shots then they will be OK.

Remember...Red watery eyes....Bleeding......Get to the Vet ASAP!

Tomato Juice is a No No!

Tomato Juice and or Vinegar has been touted for years as the cure all. However this is not the case. At best all it does is makes your animal smell like a Skunk that just ate a Tomato salad with a vinegar dressing. Plus the acids can burn the skin. Not very kind to the animal and the smell is still there. Plain soap and water doesn't cut the oils that are found in the skunk spray.

Now for the answer you're looking for.

I am not going to bore you with explaining how the chemical reaction works and why. The easiest way to do that is "Think Oxy clean"

If possible give your pet its bath outside. If its too cold or raining, or for whatever reason you can't, use the bathroom with a window. Close the door and open the window.

Here is what you will need.

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2. New unopened.

1/4 cup of Baking Soda.

1 teaspoon of Liquid Soap.

1 pair of plastic or latex gloves

1 Bucket or pail.

Directions;

Mix the ingredients in an open container (do not store in a sealed bottle--it will explode).Using gloves, wash your dog with lukewarm water and the mixture while the mixture is bubbling. Work the mixture well into the fur. Be sure to concentrate on the area that was sprayed. Keep mixture away from your dog's face and eyes (it's a harsh solution). (If your dog has been sprayed in the face, try any over-the-counter douche). Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes or so before rinsing off.
Rinse the dog with lukewarm tap water. Take extra care around your dog's eyes (use a washcloth to cover the eyes if you're rinsing the head). Use a soft absorbent towel to pat your pet dry.

This also works with other animals. If you are going to give your cat this bath, good luck. I would suggest heavy leather gloves instead of rubber. Cats are not know to be a fan of taking a bath.

The next best thing you can do now is love on your pet. They have just been through a very trying ordeal and needs some reassurance from you that they will be alright. If you live around skunks feel free to copy and print this how too. I know all too well first hand how well this works. My Black Lab and Pit mix came in one night after an encounter with a skunk. Took 3 days to get the smell out of my nose. I hope you never need this bit of information, but if you do I am glad I could give it to you.

I love dogs and have two of my own. This is a very nice lens. It's informative and unique. I never know when it might happen to my dogs since I live near the woods.

We've got raccoons in San Francisco (strange ones -- small and timid, unlike back home in MN) and I'm sure that means we've got skunks too. Hopefully my cats will never pick a fight with one, but it's good to know this lens is here if they do! 5*s!
