Demand Studios- Writing More Efficiently

Efficiency

type=textIf you're visiting this page, you've probably already been hired as a Demand Studios freelance writer. If so- congratulations! You earned one of the tougher freelance writing jobs you can get online today. Demand Studios truly demands a lot from its writers. And you've made the cut!

You love working from home. No extra gas, you can work in your pajamas, and you set your own hours...

But I'm also guessing that something just isn't clicking right. You're writing, submitting, getting paid...but maybe it just seems harder than it should.

*Are you getting only a handful of articles done in seemingly endless hours?

*Are you getting frustrated with constant re-write and resubmissions?

*Are you finding it tough to pick decent titles, even though there are over 100,000 to choose from?

Then you're where I was with Demand Studios two months after I started, way back in April 2008. By July I was writing 20 hours a week but only getting $150.

After lots of frustration I had to take a step back and see: what was I doing wrong?

Once I figured it out the key to my problems, I DOUBLED my weekly income and cut my writing time in HALF. I could now rake in $300 a week in 10 hours' time.

The key was efficiency. So follow along as I tell my Demand Studios history and how it helped to shape "Writing Efficiently For Demand Studios".

Demand Studios- The Efficiency Model

The Mother of All Invention

type=textThey say that necessity is the mother of all invention. My e-book, "Writing Efficiently For Demand Studios" is a product of that axiom.
You see, I had just separated from a great Air Force career. I was hired to work on a military base in California but the pay wasn't going to make up the difference between having a steady paycheck and home versus the California economy. It was April 2008 and I was hired to write for Demand Studios. In those days, you could only choose from "How To" and "About". You were lucky to get 100 titles to choose from.
I would write a few articles every week just for the fun of it. The money was paid quickly, and "How To"'s were fun for me because I learned as I wrote.
But when the recession hit full on one month later, we were in hot water. Long story short, I kept my full time job but really needed to get some extra money so I could pay some unexpected bills. I needed at least $300 a week writing for Demand Studios to make ends meet.
Demand Studios wasn't going to be fun. It was now going to be serious work.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to go to grad school full time, two nights a week.
And spend time with my wife and two kids.

How was I going to squeeze all this in?

Demand Studios- Controlling My Environment

type=textWhen I took a step back in July 2008, I had to look at what was making writing for Demand Studios so hard. Turns out it wasn't just one thing; it was a NUMBER of things that needed serious tweaking. I had to figure out how to pay attention to my wife and kids from home even though I was technically "working." I needed to squeeze in study time. I also wanted to stop burning out by day 3.

And as Demand Studios grew, I needed to grow with it.

So the first issue I tackled was my working environment. Consequently it's the first chapter in "Writing Efficiently For Demand Studios" . You simply can't make major changes without budgeting the time to do so!
In Chapter One, I discuss the three elements of setting the right writing environment: Time, Space and Connectivity.

For Time, I found the best hours of the day where I could write uninterrupted.

With Space, I had to have a long chat with my family about when I was going to be "at work " and when they could knock on the office door.

And with Connectivity, I had to truly consider the best, most reliable internet connectivity and computer system since I knew I was going to be in this for the long haul.

These are just the outlines of what Chapter One: The Environment (see a preview of this chapter at Lulu) can teach you. I will say that once I combined the elements, I was less stressed when writing and I was really able to focus on another Demand Studios time-sucker: Researching!

Demand Studios- Cutting The Research Time

type=textBy the fall of 2008, Demand Studios had expanded their title options. You could now do "How Does" in addition to "About" and "How To". Yet I was still struggling to find titles to write on. I was hitting a slump, and Christmas was coming, too. I knew I was reaching for the bottom of the Demand Studios barrel when I started writing on Hair Restoration. I still had a full head of hair!

But I started noticing patterns in the titles available. There were sometimes multiple titles about the same subject. If you selected the right resources, you could knock out three or four of them in less than two hours.

I also found myself selecting more and more titles about things I DID know about. I just had to find the right stimuli. "Chapter Two: Researching" describes those stimuli and how to pick not only the right titles but the right price.

Once I hit this groove, it was easier and easier to get the work done. No longer was I running to my PC as soon as the kids were in bed, typing from prime time to the late late shows. I could stroll in at 8:30, finish up by 10:30 and sleep well. I could do this five nights a week, giving me my weekends back! Even when the winter months hit and title selection was down to the teens, I managed to grab just the right ones and keep my $300 a week average going. We had Christmas after all!

Demand Studios- More Efficiency

In "Writing Efficiently For Demand Studios" , I also talk about other steps needed to maximize efficiency. Like knowing when to fight a reject or rewrite.
Now that I had more free time on my hands, I could delve more into the forums. I noticed that a lot of writers complained incessantly about their rewrite requests. They really, really complained about single rejections. They complained about not having much creativity as a freelance writer for Demand Studios. I could read hours and hours of complaints.

I thought to myself, "Is it really worth it to spend all that time complaining? And where is the creativity in Demand Studios?"

The answer to the first question is "no". It isn't worth it. Just imagine this: would you argue with your boss for two hours to get some thoughts off your chest if he wasn't going to pay you?

And what if you could actually make MORE money by addressing the rewrites the correct way? I did. In six months' time I only had a handful of rewrite requests with VERY few rejections. And I still raked in $1,200 a month.

Chapter Four, "Rewrites and Rejects" tells you how to do it.
