The Denver Democratic National Convention 2008

My hometown, Denver, Colorado, is currently hosting the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Denver is now full of Democrats, delegates, dignitaries and a few celebrities too!

Tuesday night we heard from Michelle Obama at the Pepsi Center talking about who she is and speaking of her husband, along with the exciting appearance of Edward Kennedy. Last night Hillary Clinton took the stage with her commanding speech designed to unite the Democrats behind Barack Obama. Tonight we will hear from Bill Clinton and Joe Biden.

Tomorrow, Thursday August 28, after hundreds of hard working stage hands (kudos to IATSE Local #7!!) move tons of equipment over to Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium, we will hear and see Barack Obama make his acceptance speech.

My DNC Experience

For my job I've been working some DNC events - the National Democratic Institute events and Rocky Mountain Roundtable. I've met people from all over the world and from around the corner.

Tuesday I sat in a big ballroom with just a few people and had the blissful experience of watching and listening to James Taylor as he did his sound check while Tony Bennett stood by in his yellow jacket waiting for his turn.

Yesterday I saw Madeline Albright and Bill Clinton.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Behind the Scenes

Who Makes it Happen?

Everyone here in Denver is amazed at the transformation of the Pepsi Center and all the venues being used by the DNC. One might wonder "wow - how does that happen?" Well, it happens in large part due to the hard work of the members of IATSE Local #7 workers. The IATSE is the labor union representing technicians, artisans and craftspersons in the entertainment industry, including live theatre, motion picture and television production, and trade shows.

These men and women have been working long, hard hours for weeks on end to make this an incredible experience for the delegates, politicians and participants. Many of them have been working 10, 12, even 14 or 18 hour days, taking tremendous time away from their families to make this happen.

When you watch the coverage on TV, please take a moment to appreciate the work these IATSE members have done. When the lighting looks good, when that camera shot is spot on, when the stage looks terrific and is safe, thank a stagehand. They work hard and rarely get the public recognition they deserve for the work they do.

Sound off!

I'm still an undecided voter waiting to hear and learn a little more from both sides. I'm leaning Democratic, however. We shall see.
