Who is DENIS NOVATO, diatonic accordion World Champion

Ranked #2,500 in Music, #71,269 overall

Meet Denis Novato, button box virtuoso from Slovenia

In 1998 Denis won the World Champion on the Diatonic Accordion title, which helped him change his life and career path - from working for customs and transport company as a Commercial Academy graduate - to becoming a full time musician.

With all the music-related activities Denis does, we could hardly mark him as anything but a very accomplished musician. However, Novato seems to be most famous for his performance on his favorite instrument - as virtuoso of diatonic harmonic.

Virtuosity defined: A virtuoso (from Italian virtuoso, late Latin virtuosus, Latin virtus meaning: skill, manliness, excellence) is an individual who possesses outstanding technical ability at singing or playing a musical instrument. The plural form is either virtuosi or the Anglicisation, virtuosos, and the feminine form sometimes used is virtuosa. Virtuosi are often musical composers as well.

In Music in the Western World by Piero Weiss and Richard Taruskin we find the following definition of virtuoso:

"...a virtuoso was, originally, a highly accomplished musician, but by the nineteenth century the term had become restricted to performers, both vocal and instrumental, whose technical accomplishments were so pronounced as to dazzle the public."

The defining element of virtuosity is the performance ability of the musician in question, who is capable of displaying feats of skill well above the average performer.

Denis Novato on Broadway - and where else?

Denis is performing on a regular basis in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, U.S.A., Belgium and Canada, in March he will play on a trip called Cruising in Caribbeans - on Carnival Legend ship. He has also performed in Australia.

In November of 2005 he had been invited to collaborate with the famous festival in Orlando, Florida - organized by association of accordionists. Novato took part among the champions of different genres - such as: jazz, etno, folk, blues, etc... being the only one accordionist of diatonic.

His splendid performance and mastery of the instrument brought him a huge success and the audience was taken away by his music.

Although the diatonic accordion or button box is traditionally known as an instrument for playing folk music, Denis also plays other Slovenian, Italian and Austrian songs, arranges other songs, and plays a special jazz arrangements on his button box.

Denis Novato - composer

Up to date Denis Novato has composed more then 50 melodies, some for himself and some for other musical groups.

The Big Band of RTV Slovenia has arranged two of his songs for the orchestra - with huge success.

Denis Novato - teacher

Despite his busy schedule, Novato still sets aside some time to give lessons in playing a button box. His efforts are primarily focused on quality - and the number of students he teaches is very limited.

Lessons are taught on one-to-one basis, once a week. Denis finds this the best way to completely dedicate himself to his students and their progress. When needed, the lessons can be intensified when a student needs to get ready for competitions, shows or recordings.

Denis Novato chooses a personalized method of teaching for each one of his students, depending on their knowledge, ambitions and desires.

No prior knowledge is required to take Denis Novato's lessons on diatonic accordion. There's no age restrictions, either. During their first year of learning, his students master the basics in correct diatonic accordion playing, and are capable to perform some simple tunes with bass accompaniment.

The only requirements Denis has to accept someone as a student are:

  • suitable physical ability to hold the accordion

  • independent learning skills

  • to own a diatonic accordion - any brand

  • and most importantly - love for music and the instrument

Denis Novato and his accordion

So far, Denis has owned eight accordions. His very first one, a piano accordion "Moreschi" was followed by seven diatonic accordions.

The first button box he owned was made by a craftsman in Triest, Italy - called Rasman. Then he played accordions which were made for him by a well known Valenin-Zdravko Zupan from Menges in Slovenia.

For the last several years Denis has been performing on a Lanzinger, which proudly carries his last name - Novato. It is the most prestigious model from the Austrian company who have named this master diatonic accordion performer: Lanzinger-Novato.

Denis Novato, playing Can-Can

Recently, I've noticed more and more accordion players from around the world playing classical, pop, rock and other genres of music on their button boxes or piano accordions. Many times people's comment sounds something like. "It's not possible to play that music with accordion." But - leave it to the masters - anything is possible!

True story

Denis Novato meets Alex Meixner

This is a true story Alex Meixner told me. He is a very talented musician who lives in South Florida and plays accordion and several other instruments. This dialog happened at one of the events where both, Denis Novato and Alex Meixner, were performing.

Alex Meixner: "I wish I could play button box like you do!"
Denis Novato: "I wish I had your hair..."

I guess noone has everything. :)

To see what Novato was talking about, watch the video below and watch Meixner performing.

And, it you want to see Alex Meixner live, he'll be performing in Spring Hill, FL, on December 9, 2011. All the details are available at: Suncoast Dance and Party Center - schedule of events for 2011/12.
